So, looking at getting an 03 that has had the 90K done by a Audi dealer (says mechanic used to work at Lexus so he has experience with the 100s) . The truck has 95K on it. I asked if they used OEM parts and he said they were from O'Reilly. Do I need to be concerned? I'm super anal about using OEM on all my previous trucks...

thanks

There's no way in heck I'd trust a water pump of unknown origin (likely China) in a vehicle that I rely on to get me in and out of some pretty remote places. Go OEM.

crap, yea I agree, but its done...everything else about the truck is perfect tho...I've done the water pump on a 60, but not sure I'd want to tackle one on a 100... if that aftermarket pump should fail, maybe I shoudl ask them for some kinda warranty on the parts?

...oh and nice color btw...

That pump is way in there. That is precisely why they are often replaced when the timing belt is being replaced. Even if I wasn't a factory kinda guy I'd use only an OEM pump on this application.

I didn't read your post thoroughly the first time. Didn't realize it was already installed. As Dan said, it's a major DIY to get back out. At this point, I don't think that would throw the deal for me on an otherwise perfect vehicle. But, I'd be a lot more attentive to any possible leak or bearing noise than I would otherwise.

I went OEM too of course. I think ours was leaking a bit at 90K.

Yours may not be too bad. Hopefully it'd just be seals that would go rather than something mechanical. Keep an eye out for weeping?

Seem to remember, think in the FSM that when pump seal fails you should replace timing belt. Is that because a failed seal on pump can damage the timing belt, or just because you are in there. Can someone verify this?

I think it depends on the price. It has been replaced and that in itself shows the owner believed in maintaing it, which is a good thing. It could last a long time with no issues.

I would only use OEM myself, but not sure this in itself is a deal breaker if everything else is spot on and the price is good. You can make a point to check around with a flash light for leaks every oil change and keep an eye on it.

Probably going to be fine. Switch to OEM at next TB change in 90k. Not ideal but wouldn't keep me from buying a 100. Disagree that it's even a bargaining point, it's a minor theoretical imperfection.

Part warranty is of little value since they are so cheap. New OEM from crusierdan is under $100 but it's the labor that would matter if it failed (not too likely IMOP) and no one warrants that.

I'm talking about the water pump. The work was done at a dealership (albeit Audi). They know the value of OEM parts. You tell them it's a potential issue that could cost you a grand in near future repairs. Not saying it's going to get you the truck for free, but anything that can be used as leverage . . .

I did it, I figure everything else is just what I wanted and the price was right...it feels great to be back in a Hundy, I like having the 5 spd and Navi, vs my 2000...Already started the Gulf States debling, which is fun. The FJ was fun, but it was under powered, and really not as good off road as I thought it would be, you cant beat the 100 series power and off road capabilties (and no more FJ blind spot either) plus with 2 kids and a bunch of junk everywhere we go, the FJ was just not the best fit ..
