Optimum Tail-pipe Placement (1 Viewer)

I slapped up a length of 2-1/2" pipe for my exhaust. It ended just rear of my rear axle. Drove it around for a couple of weeks, and think I started getting carbon monoxide poisoning! Fumes so bad they penetrated my clothing all the way to the skin. So I extended the pipe to the rear and it dumps out under the bumper. I still get some fumes (not even close to as bad as it was) and I know one day I'll bash it bigger than sh*t. I may just have to break down and have a muffler shop bend me up a tail pipe to eliminate both the fumes and the probability of crushing it on a rock. But the question is, where exactly is that perfect spot? Some say to cut a hole in the bumper and run it thru there, but because I have such crappy weatherstripping on my rear door and window, I'm pretty sure it'll still get fumes in the cab. I could come out thru the arc in the frame at the rear wheel well and have it dump out the side, but pretty sure if it isn't tucked up out of the way enough, it'll get bashed there too.
Anyone solved this prob?
BTW I can't really run it in the stock location cause I have a header.

I've got the same question as you. My exhaust was stock, but I kept pinching it close on rocks and even had the axle bend it. Then I tried straight back, fumes were not so bad, but on a 55 that lasts about half a wheeling trip. So now my exhaust goes as close to the rear shackle as possible, sticks outs and little farther than it should, and points down a tiny bit. With this, I cannot drive with the rear window down without huffing fumes. Sorry, no help, just a different version of your story.
However, I am happing with the current routing being above the skidplate and frame.

dude i already told ya what to do!! run that exhaust out the side after the tire somewhere. but have the exhaust shop keep it short, then get two extensions so if ya bugger one up you have a backup ready to go. thats what i'll be doing.

Mine is right behind the drivers rear tire pointing slightly down....on decelleration it sucks in exhaust with the window open. badly...

MIne is also directly behind the driver side rear tire, and sticks out far enough to be in the air stream. Still smells with the window open. I was tempted to put it directly behind the tire, running between the spring and frame, but that is pretty tight. I guess there really is no other place to run it on a 55. Under the bumper is bad and will get @&@&@&@&ed up, no matter what. Through the bumper still might cause fumes to go in the cab at low speed.

Mine runs to the stock location just in front of the drivers side rear tire and I havent really had any problem. To answer your question though what about a pipe similar to a big rig. I have seen it on a couple 40's. Basically they ran the pipe to the back and then up so that it dumps out at the roofline. Sucks for anyone behind you I imagine but works good for you.

as i haven't driven mine that much I had no idea this problem was so bad, i remember a bit of a smell entering but the dust from dirt roads is what i didn't like.
mine exits the same a snailwagon's, behind the rear tyre and sticking out a bit, it's a little different to when i last drove it so it'll be interesting to see how it goes.

I dont have a camera here at work but I may be able to get something this weekend. I had mine exit just forward of the rear drivers side tire between the frame and spring. Its tucked up tight to the body (about 1\2 in) and about an inch from the tire. It extends out just shy of the tire. Before the engine "refresh" I did get some exhaust in the rear window, but its much better now. I like the location and it seems to be close enough to the tire to stay out of danger. I don't go out and beat the snot out of my truck though. It sits on a 3" lift and 33" bfg's

when my exhaust came out just in front of the rear tire it was fine, no fumigation. i think i'll run it up the side of the rig trucker style, thats hot.

Not to hijack...but... I was more or less raised in Prescott. I lived in Cottonwood for awhile too. I miss the warm waters of bullpen and grasshopper point. My family used to have a cabin down on beaver creek. Pretty country.
