Optimas are no good?

Well, my OPINION is that they are not worth the extra $ and they are overhyped! I personally had 2 red tops take a s*** within a year and a good friend of mine had 2 yellows die within 1.5 years, one of which lasted 3 months!!! Sure, they were covered under warranty, but a "warranty" isnt going to do much good if your hundreds of mile from civilization! D

Optimas seem to be very inconsistent with their durability. Some people have them for years and years and love them and some peoples die within 9 months. Their longevity seems pretty random!

I now run Dual Sears Die Hards only! No problems and they were $79 each!

Save your $

Find your local battery supplier around you. They are the ones who warehouse the batteries and deliver them to stores. Buy blemished batteries from them. I can get brand new interstate batteries with a scratch for 22 dollars and optimas for 30. I could give a rats ass if it has a scratch or some numbnut bought it thinking his battery was dead aonly to find his alternator or something elses was shot and returned it. I have been buying these batteries for over ten years and never had a failure.

in regards to the Optima's durability......IME as a government fleet mechanic we have put numerous yellow top Optima batteries in vehicles that toast any other battery with outstanding results. I will be replacing my own vehicle's batteries with Optimas as needed. I also feel that the Optima will hold up better to off road shock and rough riding 4x4's better than a stock "wet" type battery.

my red top is on 6yrs in AZ desert heat and starts my piggy right up even after sitting for a month sometimes. too bad about random bad ones, i guess i got lucky.

I've got two Optima redtops on my shop floor that didn't last a year and no matter how or how long I try to charge them I'm having to realize that they're just no damned good.

Back to regular old batteries now in all my vehicles.

Just an FYI, i have had flawless performance from Sears Die Hard Golds and their "Industrial" models!

hearing about your guys' opinions on optimas, i'm curious if there is another sealed, non-liquid filled option aside from them?

Yes, Excide Orbitals and Oddessys

Havent heard of a single one failing yet but they are big $

Most of the Baja Racers use the Oddessys and swear by them!

big $ - no shizz! i see prices at $268/piece for the 2150. granted, they look to have great specs. that price isn't reasonable unless i was doing a multiple continent trek.

the exides look to be comprable to the optimas & around $134 retail. would like to get a deep cycle versus the regular battery available at Kragen.

will keep looking for a local vendor... thanks!

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I've had the red one in my truck for about 8 years and still going strong. I put one in my 80 a year ago and no problems. I will NEVER use a wet battery. I don't like battery acid leaking all over the inside of my enging compartment when I'm laying on my side or something.
