so shoot me now. i haven't even driven my piggie and today, i yanked out the rear axle i just rebuilt last year...to put in a rear axle. an fj60 axle ;) no where near done with the install. need to get it exact in it's local, mod a brake line/fitting, notch the old spring perches for ubolts, weld the new perches and hook everything up.

the front needs to be cut and turned and i need to install the outboard kit i got from jeremiah :)

someday i'll get to actually drive it instead of sitting in the drivers seat and saying "vrooooom" :D

just spent time with 'root analyzing the swap and i guess it does fill out the fenderwell better. we compared it with the pic i posted in the photos thread here. it seems the old axle left a hare of the flared out section at the top overhanging, whereas the 60 axle runs the tire out to the edge.

i'm kicking myself for not getting comparative before and after pics. :doh:
 
seems like a lot of work for an inch of width on either side... what is the actual difference in width between the two axle housings? any other benefit to going with the 60 vs. the 55 housing?

about 3" over all on the width. you do get the e brake relocated to the wheels and they are "self adjsuting"
 
I don't want to burst your bubble, but take a look at the 60 forum and search "ebrake".... the "self adjusting" feature works pretty well if you keep it very dry and the moon is correctly aligned with Jupiter. But add some mud or frequent wet/dry cycles (and or just bad luck) and they don't work all that well.

I'm not trying to be a naysayer. Really. But if you are going to the trouble of mounting new axles, it would be worth at least considering rear discs.

For the record: yes, I've used a parking brake ebrake. They suck even worse than the 60-series ebrake.

i've had no issues with the brake on my 60. works great. the one on my pickup was locked up from neglect (everything on that truck was neglected when i got it), but nothing some pb and a hammer didn't fix.
 
Ige, that is going to be one bad a$$ piggy when it gets on the road or trail maybe more accurate

I'll follow this thread as I was just thinking about a 60 rear axle for the Piggy.

Coincidentally, the day I brought the Pig down from Cheyenne I heard about a potential rear 60 housing.

I need pics of what all is involved though...

Do 60 rear housings have sway bar links that will match the 55 rear sway bar?
 
mine are too early to have a rear sway bar, but i doubt they'd line up with the piggie anyways. the ubolts go right about the center of the spring perch, so most remove the perches. i think i'm going to just notch them. make spring mounts, shave top ubolt plate to fit new spring perches.

in the front, you have to outboard springs, so that will be much more complicated. that's a ways away though. going to get the rear done and get it running, than front.
 
with the raffle rig all last year, actually having a winter for the first time in about a decade, and getting the other pig ready for moab, i haven't even had time to touch it. after moab, i gotta get a few things done to the ford, and deal with the 80, then it's on to the pig again....

or, find me a rich man, so he can support me while i work on my junk:D
