Ft Lewis I presume? What time frame?

Why yes! '87 - '90, 1/9 Calvary - OH-58D Recon Platoon. Wife Sherry worked for TBS Sports on the Goodwill Games in Seattle. Our first apartment was in Tacoma just down the road from Chambers Bay where last years US Open was. That course didn't even exist when we lived there, it was a rock quarry. Had not been back to visit until 3 years ago....as expected after 25 years, a lot had changed. Couldn't even get on the now "Joint Base Lewis - McCord" to show our daughter where we lived when we finally got base housing and where I worked, was quite a bummer! Great assignment for someone who had not been west of the Mississippi until entering the military. Have a very good friend whom I met there when we were 2LT's who just retired as an O-6 and pretty good chance he will be working for a defense contractor along the Hood River!

Eric, when were you there?

I was at McChord from 94-97. 62nd AGS on the C141B. I was an aircraft electrician. Hated when I found out I was going there but fell in love with the place. I loved the Airlift Rodeo's and air shows. Not to mention beers at Rollie's. lol

Wow cool stuff. I was at Fort Lewis the SPR/Summer of 1993 for Adv Camp ROTC - not stationed there and as a cadet LOL :)

It was a super dry Spring/Summer so we had very little rain and it was beautiful. Would love to visit that area again!

I wish my Army job was as cool as a OH-58D Recon Platoon Leader, though.

As as FSO, we worked with the Cav a little bit, but not as much as we probably should have.

I was stationed at Ft Stewart, which was . . .well . . not Fort Lewis, but lots of great people, hot and a lot of work :)

This is so cool! So Eric, how much longer did the 141's fly for? I remember seeing a lot of them at David Monothan several years ago and the tour guide said they destroyed most of them. One of the most impressive things I recall was seeing a few C-5's land and take off from the Air Field at Lewis, which was not long! I may have been to Rollie's but don't distinctly remember it....maybe more of an Air Force hangout? Drank lots of beers at Engine House No. 9! We really thought about putting down roots there as I got out in September of '90 and my wife's contract with TBS Sports ended in August and she had a couple job offers locally. Being from Miami I didn't enjoy the long stretches of not seeing the sun in the winter! Thankfully we typically went to Yakima or the NTC in Califormia for maneuvers/war games!

Be very thankful you went to Advanced Camp at Lewis and not Bragg where I had to go! Where did you graduate from? So all schools went to Lewis in later years? How nice!

So Jamie, you were Field Artillery? Actually, I was branched that with orders to go to Ft. Stewart and after OBC at Ft. Sill got into a program that sent me to Flight School at Rucker and the slot was to go to Ft. Lewis.....a huge win-win! I was supposed to serve one more year due to flight school, additional training, but thru either a paper mix-up or miscommunication (very surprising for the U.S. Army, right?) I got my orders to ETS on my original date. I have fond memories of my 4 years active duty and have kept up a few friendships. Ft. Lewis was nice but training in Yakima was like being in the desert sometimes but thankfully we could fly with the doors off!

My dad was an FSO in the 1st Calvary when it formed and was part of the advanced party when they went to Vietnam in 1965. He didn't talk much about it until the book "We were Soldiers Once and Young" came out, and then the movie. He was in a different Battalion but lost a few friends during that battle. Near the end when they call in a Napalm attack on their own position, a young Japanese American, Tommy Nakajima, gets killed in a pretty gruesome scene. He and my dad sat next to each other on the flights over to Vietnam from Ft. Bragg and got to know each other. My brother and I were incredulous at the stories that he shared after that.

Jeff - Answers: :)

Kansas State University.
When I went through ROTC, all schools West of the Mississippi went to Lewis and all schools East went to Bragg
Amazing re: the coincidence of Fort Stewart and FA!
My first choice was for Aviation Branch, but I got MI Detailed FA - my second choice
Amazing re: your Dad!

Too funny. Such a small world. Not a whole lot longer after I left. At least at McChord. They started bringing in the C-17's shortly after that. Rollie's was out the side gate and yeah definitely more of an AF watering hole than anything else. Not sure how many more of the 141's are out there but I want to take the kids to find one soon and let them climb around in one. I always told Stacy if we ever left NC, my first choices would be Alaska or the PacNW. I really did love it up there.

Funny thing I was with her family down in Charleston one weekend talking to her cousin's dad. Turns out he worked on the C-17 out of Charleston and was telling me randomly that he went to McChord for one of the first Rodeo's and it was while I was there. I love stuff like this. See, you should have came to Hurricane creek. Just imagine the stories. lol

No kidding Eric, I am bummed that we missed that one but look forward to seeing you and the family on a future one!

You think maybe the guy that's the target of the manhunt is watching these announcements? IE: if you were him, you now know where they've stopped looking for you...

Well, he still can't swim or use the bathroom there, so he'll probably just move on.

I bet he is simply peeing in the rivers and taking advantage of the low tourist levels due to these messages!

So, let's see Eric and Ted try to put their junk where it don't belong now.....chemical burns. LOL
