For me, the biggest difference are people within the Jeep and LC communities.

This! Agree 100 percent.

I would argue that the TJ was mostly unchanged through '06 so not sure why '02-'03 marks a downward turn. The newest iteration of the Wrangler (JK) indeed does have power windows, locks, leather and lots of plastic...kinda' like an 80, 100, 200 series LC, right? Toyota has been doing this crap since '91. Jeep held the utilitarian line for another 16 years past the point when Toyota made the change to start producing luxury vehicles. I guess they just finally gave in and sold out to the luxury market but at least they kept the solid front axle. Is an 80 not a LC because it has leather? Is a 100 not a LC because it has IFS? The JK is a Jeep. It's plastic fantastic...but it is a Jeep at heart.

Your employee who bought a brand new Rubicon has a very capable off road vehicle but he will probably never use it off road. Neither will 99.9 percent of owners of brand new 200 series LC's or LX's. Anyone who can afford to buy a new Rubicon IS all that and a bag of chips. Same can be said for the guy who goes out and buys a new LX570. I know I can't.

You hit the nail on the head when it comes to the LC community though. You guys are great. This club is fantastic...and I'm proud to be a part of it.

Yep - I enjoyed my Jeep when it wasn't broken. But the people that owned Jeeps were split into two groups:

1 - "Mudders" - generally Appalachian Americans with beater Wranglers and mullets and 'here watch this' attitudes
or
2 - "Posers" - JK owners that have $60k into accessories, but rarely take them off road.

The two groups didn't co-mingle. And me with an old CJ5 didn't fit into either mold. As a Brit, I toyed with the idea of a Land Rover, but after driving one I crossed that off the list.

Got nothing against jeeps at all.

If I was going to buy a new 4x4 it would be a 4 door rubicon for sure with the lack of the 70 in the US market.

I've said it before this club is the only reason I didn't sell my cruiser a long time ago and build up something a lot cheaper in its place.

Even though i'm not in NC anymore this club is going to be the reason that I again buy a cruiser instead of something else.

First, I say 2002-03 because the first "sign" was when they brought over the plastic window sprayers over from the XJ. If I remember correctly, it started mid year production in 2002. The next model year is when they started doing their plastic covers over the roll cage. That for me was a HUGE turn off. I am old school, so I liked the medal with the thing little padding. Yes it hurt like hell when my head hit it when I would go off roading, but was part of the experience I guess. Then they started adding plastic around the front window frame. Then the side mirrors were plastic, then plastic covers on the tail gate swing out, so on and so on.

Second, for me I cannot even compare a JK to a LC. I mean no offense by that at all. To me I am not even comparing the two in my head when I made my earlier statement. My comments above were about comparing Jeeps to Jeeps. As I have been a Jeep guy for many years. Just to me, Jeeps are dead because they are so far away from what they are supposed to be in my opinion. I originally got my first TJ in 98 because the previous two years I flipped a few 40's and I loved the idea of having a reliable 40 like vehicle while I am in college.
**Guys don't kill me I am not saying a TJ is as good as a 40**
When I was in college I didn't have time to constantly be working on my own personal vehicle so my DD was a TJ for my last two years of school. I wish Toyota still would make something like a 40, that's why I flipped out the first time I saw a PX10. I literally almost pissed on myself.

Certainly, not arguing that Rubicons are capable. I have a lot of time behind the wheel of the TJ Rubicon's so I can imagine what its like now and especially with the longer wheelbase. Unfortunately, my employee perfectly fits the stereotype of those who typically people buy these things. He didn't go two weeks without making his first s***tybuilt purchase. I had to explain to him what a mall crawler is and he admitted as much because it will never see off road other than the beach.

To me, there are just a worlds of difference between the typical 99.9 percent LC/LX owners and those that are in the "community." So I just don't even consider the soccer moms of the world who own them when I ever make any of my statements.

My apologies, for any confusion, again I was really comparing current Jeeps to Jeeps of old.

James,

I knew what you were saying. I was just playing devil's advocate because I am an ass. No worries! I will say this...the worst thing about driving a Jeep is having to wave to every-damn-body. It gets old.

I know what you mean. At first I thought it was great! Then I noticed there was an hierarchy of sorts based upon how much your Jeep was built. When my first TJ was stock I would wave to a rig that was about 80% Poison Spider I would get this look like "really guy." Then later I was that guy that had the Poison Spider built rig, but I was never an A-hole about it. You are right after awhile its gets old.

In high school, I lusted for a cj8 scrambler, and came close to buyin a couple. Couldnt afford the asking price. Instead, i cut the roof off my 2wd nissan pickup, turned it into a hardtop convertible, and drove that for a couple years. Then, I ended up with a 1st gen 4r, and that was the best of both worlds, with 25mpg, AC, and a reliable drivetrain that wouldnt break, because I wouldnt/couldnt do anything stupid out on the trails of florida. It didnt have enough beans to snap an axle. ;) That got me back onto the path of toyotas again, and now I'm one of those who deem 4wd like most deem AC, darn near necessary, even if mine are not used for hardcore crawling.

This is impressive, when I think about our equipment and things we "need" to get out and explore, check this out:

Finally got around to watching this.... I remember reading about that in a Nat Geo mag a long long time ago

Pretty cool

Here are some more good ones

Oxford/Cambridge London to Singapore expedition

90 minutes of camel trophy awesomeness

The car famous for being unsafe at any speed takes on the Darien Gap

Take it as you will though, there is a lot of threads on other forums saying that the cars were airlifted at many times and never actually made it all the way through.

In fact the Land Rover team that went through found some of the corvairs abandoned in the jungle

I have seen some of these before, not the Oxford one, Thanks! I dont watch much TV, so I sometimes spend the time looking for cool instructional or other videos like that on youtube.

I am at awed at anyone who had a jeep or any truck in college, I could barely afford my 10 speed bike (sold it eventually) and had no time to do anything but homework. Yes, I was a saint in college...:skull:

And I said this before, when I grow up I want to be Dave Rushing. Has all the cool toys!

Here's the two part series of the old 1980s landcruiser instructional video... "Getting through it". Really neat and some cool tricks. Enjoy!

I always love to see the 60 series blacked out from the factory, long before it was trendy or a necessity(due to fading/clacking chrome on the grill).

Let me know what u think.

Part 1

Part 2

Excellent! Will do.

Update, googled it for a while but couldn't find them. But this video of the Jeep guys in '78 got me thinking about all the crap I am "wanting and needing" to add to my 80 for "better expedition gear". I am ridiculous, these guys drove from the southern tip of Chile to the Alaska, and they had jerry cans roped off by the handle to the back of the jeep! No RTTs, no GaiaGPS, no special tools, just willingness and simple vehicles (mustaches and cowboy hats didn't hurt either). That's awesome.

I am now inspired and will release my new line of expedition gear, CubanChrome Gear. Built with crap you find around the house. The awning will be first. The cupholder from pvc pipe is already out.

That soundtrack rocks :)

Ah! Yes, those I have seen, never noticed the name of the title. I had actually posted them a while ago in the "Lets get trained" thread. Thanks!

I have a question about political correctness.

If I am to understand all these new bathroom laws etc, it comes down to how you "identify"

My question, if I identify as disabled can I park closer to the door at the mall?

Nope, not how you identify, but what is on your birth certificate. So using your disabled analogy you could only park closer if you were born handicapped, not if you sustained injury later in life.

It's been a few years since they were worked on... Do these look okay?
