Is there a rule of thumb as to size of the air tank needed when running on-board air?

Will be using a York 210 compressor to air up 35's.

I like a 20# bottle;)

Howdy! I'm running the largest York and a 2.5 gal tank. When I fill my 35's from 12 to 35, the York runs 90% of the time, and it takes several minutes per tire. If I run the idle up to 1200-1500, it fills faster, and I can run a 2nd line off to do both sides of my rig, or another rig. I luv that thing!! John

Go to a truck wrecking yard and get brake air tank from a semi. Works fine and fits under the rear of the cruiser. Be careful though, make sure the tank is not full of rust. I run a York also with a 2f, the York runs about 90% of the time when airing up. I can do all 4 tires to 25# in about 15 min.

The rule of thumb- biggest tank you can easily fit.

However, you don't really need a tank with a York, especially just for filling tires.

My 209 model York can push more air at 2000 RPM's than will go through a regular tire stem.

I also have run impact wrenches and die grinders on the trail with no air tank, just high RPM's. A few gallon tank wouldn't hurt.

Air tank

My Air Compressor takes about 10 mins to fill up my 35's. I've just bought 38's and I was thinking of fitting a 40 litre or so (don't know conversion to gallons for this) so I could fill it up with my compressor at home before I leave, so my little portable one doesn't take so long to air up? Is this overkill?

Chris

Quick suggestion for the "buy one from a semi" crowd....

Buy one for a trailer. They are made in standard sizes, and are MUCH cheaper (like $20 or so) than the tanks for the tractor. Should be able to find them at any air brake house or supplier. The only difference is that the trailer tanks have slightly different mounting bracketry.

what is the cfm on one of these yorks? give or take?

Not sure what is considered a cheap tank, but a 2.5 gallon Viair tank, for example, is only $70 and comes with mounting points and six 1/4" ports.

I picked up a small cambell hausfeld tank on ebay a while back for something like $10. It was from one of those mini compressors and it even had mounting tabs on it already. I turned it upside down and mounted to the floor under the rear. Worked sweet. I have pictures at work, so I'll try to post tomorrow. I also ran a york, and it could fill that tank in a minute or so no problem.
