My March 68 fj40 doesn't have pins to hold the brake shoes and there are no holes present for them. When you put things back together be sure to to put both brake springs on the back side or behind the shoes, I think this helps keep them in place better. I thought 71's had the pins, maybe you have an earlier axle?

The "birfield" is on your axle inside your knuckle. It is what allows your wheels to turn left and right while driven. Think of them like a complicated u-joint. It uses a Ball and Claw type design.

Gotcha…thanks Shawn! That must be why my truck only goes in a straight line.

OP, I have a 7/71 cruiser…I don't recall any pins on the brake shoes…I do remember the springs, having -ucked them up a few times on the install, with them not being in the correct position. I have some vague recollection that one goes in the front and one in the back but don't hold me to that, rather check your manuals. And it also took me days to get the drums off the first time I did the brakes, 30 years ago, so I feel your pain.
