I have used teflon tape for a few of them in the past. If you unscrew it slightly, use a long piece of it and make it into a roll and then wrap it around the base...

You know I always thought I was using RTV the proper way it was intended. Until a friend of mine read the back of the package. What? Read the instructions? Never!

He stated the proper way was to make a bead tehn install the part and only hand tighten the bolts down to align the two pieces then let it cure and then come back and torque it down.

Anyone have any thoughts?
Thought: read & follow the instructions for best results.
Different formulas have different properties. some say let skin, some say install immediately, some say wait 24 hrs before returning to service...

If rubber is good enough for the oil filter which IS under pressure - It should be fine for the drain plug which is not.
Ditto, I have a rubber gasket on my oil drain plug and it's never leaked. Actually, I think it's a rubber o-ring from my household plumbing bucket. I have an 1981 BJ42, so maybe the oil pan is a different shape? Anyhow, my two cents worth.:)

Cheers

Don't know if the link will work or not. I ordered the gasket listed in the diagram for the transfer case and was expecting a fiber washer. Instead I got 4 metal rings from toyotapartscheap.com

Did they send the wrong thing or what?

It doesn't have the usual looking label on the bag. They just handwrote the part number on the bag.

Newer model or they just thought I wouldn't notice?
