Oil Filters for 1HZ/1PZ/1HDT/1KZ/2LT....etc.

Mostly when people open an oil filter it is to look for problems. Would never have though to use a zip disc as all the debris might confuse that outcome.

I will lend you my large wheel cutter next time haha so you don’t end up with element and oil all over yourself and shop. Haha

In my case I wasn't looking for problems, just evaluating the alternate filter design/quality (point of this thread). Won't be cutting another open, but thanks anyhow.

I have a few of the "union japan" filters that came with this new to me truck along with a couple other overseas filters. I'd be curious to see what the media looks like in comparison. I've got a cutter you're welcome to use if needed.
On a side note, I cut them open pretty often at work to see if an engine is "making metal". Pull the media, cut a 2-3" X 3-4" long section, compress the oil out in a vice, open up to check for metal flakes/fragments.

I have occasionally bought from @Radd Cruisers, and they have been great I have noticed they are selling this filter and was wondering if anyone has a cut away. im just curious to see what this filter looks like on the inside.

yeah for 8 bucks I’d cut it open before running it.
At least it’s made in Japan and not somewhere else.

Yeah, I some take comfort in the 'cheap' filters from Japan too. 'Made in Japan' carries some weight.

yeah lots of cheap filters from partsouq i would like to see the inside from all off them I'm sure they will beat FRAM

I have one of the JS filters in. I weight them its heavier than the OEM Toyota... i haven't cut it open yet but it seems like the o-ring is poor quality easy to remove


comments on youtube don't seem to be to great there are claims that they can leak over time due to the o-ring shrinking.

caseing seems to be thiner on the toyota as i can easaly squeese it with my hand compaired to the JS

personally ill stick to OEM Toyota/Donaldson/WIX

Last time I got filters for my 12ht I bought a case from there. Worked out to be ok price wise.

I tried the upside down toyota number on there, didn't have much luck, so yeah maybe not.


I'm not all that sure oil filter fitment is that scientific...

Thread pitch, diameter of the seal/ Oring, and then just overall dimensions.

Wouldn't be surprised if some way more common toyota filter would fit.

Not sure what the significance of the "8T" on your filter is, but if you skip it, one or two different numbers come up.

the 8T just means made in Thailand.
Toyota filters not made in Japan anymore.

I can say quality is just as good.

This is the message that I was actually here to reply to.

I have done cut aways of most of the filters I have advertised for sale on my onlie store. The quality of all of them is decent, but not the same type of contruction as the Toyota branded filters. A few people commented on pricing - importing and storing parts is expensive. I do my best to keep prices reasonable and most of my prices have been very steady for quite a few years now generally with few large increases in cost unless the supplier cost has jumped up a lot (many engine and gasket parts have done this).

Here are three different cut aways.

The Sakura and the Wix are made in the same factory, and have the same construction. The Sakura version has a few more pleats on one of the two elements. Wix costs more to buy at the supplier level and costs more at the retail level as a result even with lower margin. Plus the name... Wix has a good name in filtration and it's popular.

The JS Askashi Filter is currently my favorite of these 3 (4 if you consider Baldwin) brands. It has a larger relief valve (they are all quite small, but adequate), and it has the nicest bypass valve - these are subjective statements as I have not performed any testing on these.

I have cut away a used Baldwin 7029, and it is very similar to these ones with a slightly thinner can. No photos at this time.

I have no way of testing the filtering ability of these filters.

I another thread someone mentioned using a stainless steel oil filter - these are not as effective as decent paper filters as dirt has to weave its way through the paper matrix and in doing so these trap considerably more dirt than a metal mesh.

I'm sure there are more than that... at least 6 of us are here regularly.

I'm sure there are better filters out there, but I've got a pile of Fram filters I picked up on clearance at Wally World. The engine only has about 120k km on it and it's super clean inside. I'm planning to change it on shorter intervals for the next couple changes... especially since once a year is frequent as mileage goes.
