I'd love to snag a nice E24, they're hard to come by in the states. Makes me miss my E28 stateside, rust in the size of a basketball in the door and everything. Such a great era for BMWs.
There's a California one for sale around $6k and negotiable on bigcoupe if you're interested I'll forward you the link

@Thebedouin60 can we get some pictures of that front bumper? custom job? Awesome Pic!!!

What bumper is that??? Does it allow a winch? Approach angle looks great on it...

It's a custom built bumper, a winch mount can be integrated behind it as well anything's possible as it's custom.

Come on @Thebedouin60 post some damned pics of it already all I got was a squinty look at it in the middle of the night

Isn't a winch in the desert pointless? A snatch strap / maxtrax / a shovel I can see value in those but a winch? plus it would make you noise heavy on those flying jumps - ha

Maybe so... Hmmm....
If you have no room to snatch? Perhaps at the bottom of a narrow bowl with no room for the pull vehicle to move on any side? I dunno... DesertNomad would know... What say you, DM?

An anchor I forgot about those. That would be a use to attach a winch to

Snatch not really possible in this situation

For self recovery you can get really lucky and be stuck within reach of a tree or bush and get yourself out. When other vehicles are involved it's much more controlled and safer as well as less stress on the vehicles.

Desert basics is a shovel, jack and wooden board to place under the jack. The rest of the recovery equipment is personal preference. From what I've seen the maxtrax work well and a snatch strap or tow rope needs to be on hand in case of break down and you need to pull the other car out, what I really want to get again is those balloon jack those are so easy and quick to use and kifts you right up.

I've used the "american off road" branded ground anchor and all it did was plough trenches in the sand. It couldn't even pull my cruiser down hill in the sand while in neutral and it wasn't even stuck. I gave that to @xkennx to see if he can design something better that would work in soft sand for a fat cruiser

That photo shows the very same scenario I meant when I said at the bottom of a "bowl." No where to snatch from...

Always been curious about balloons. They must be made of some pretty tough material to be OK with pressure from terrain and all the bolts, etc. under the truck...

Those make me a littlenervous...because I always imagine pulling so hard that they suddenly pull out and launch at ya... Never done it though...so I don't know what I'm talking about. :)

What about burying your spare and winching off that? Never tried it, but it's supposed to work...

I only tried that once and never again. You would spend much less energy digging the whole car out than burying the spare in sand.

Ya... Funny part is...if the tire trick works??? -You gotta dig TWICE. -Once to bury it...and another to unbury it.
If it does NOT work?
-You end up burying it...unburying it...and THEN dig out the truck too. ;)

On the other hand...sometimes you can't dig out the truck (mud bog) so maybe the only option sometimes?

Haha actually more like the winch pulls your spare out of the sand so i just kept winding it in instead of rolling the tire back to the cruiser.

The trick is to dig a diagonal hole, slip the spare in then dig a trench to lay your wonch cable in so as to not lift the spare up and out of the sand but through the sand.

Really difficult to pull this off in soft sand if you don't compact the sand whatever is underneath just comes right back out. I've only been in mud once and got stuck in it, took 8 hours to get out.

Honestly, I had never thought of using the tire for this. Who knows? Might be useful someday with no other options.

I retract my earlier statement - a winch is not pointless in the desert - this photo is of a crappy spot to be in and happy to have a winch - ha
