If I were to go wheeling alone (I know-not very smart) and got stuck, is there a way to contact someone in the club for help? Does anyone monitor a CB signal? Any local resources for emergency help?

Howdy! CBs are pretty much for short range, and direct line of sight. Short Wave is better for distance, but it still requires that you have line of sight to a relay tower. Cell phones are about the easiest to use, as those SW towers are usually cell phone towers also. There are certainly some/many members of CSC that have performed rescue missions in the past. Check out the CleanUp thread and you'll see that we have even been known to rescue Jeeps! John

I travel a lot solo and depend on the SPOT. Check into it if you plan on traveling solo, it can save your life along with getting you help when needed.
Most CSC members are always game for a recovery.

Mountain Cruiser has a pretty nice set up specifically for off road rescue.

I agree with LCPhil, the SPOT set up is really the best for this kind of emergency situation. More info > http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=101

Ham radio is another good option. The range is good and you can usually hit a repeater to call for help. That said I agree with Phil...SPOT doesn't have a distance limitation and will get you a first responder.

If you happen to have to use spot, do you have to pay for the rescue?

No its an optional insurance you pay for but then again if you are a dumb ass you may be held accountable but so far i have of no one that was rescued incurring any cost. My feeling is if I need to press the SAR button the last thing thats on my mind is money!

If you carry a spot please keep it in a safe place. About 2 years ago I found one on the trail from Table Mesa up to Black Canyon City. I got home called the 800 number on their website. They contacted the owners wife who in turn gave my number to her husband. Turns out he was solo on a bike and dropped it. That could of made for a very bad trip.

Brings up a good point I have gone back and forth on where to carry it. If I have on me and crash I could damage it (like I did with my cell phone on my last crash) or loose it during the crash or just loose it. Now I carry it (along with my cell) on my moto in the hopes that I can get to my moto in the event. Also works as a ghetto Low Jack until they figure out what it is:hillbilly:

I am always willing to help club members out with a recovery for the price of some diesel to mix with the veggie my recovery rig runs on. There is also a local company that does it if i'm out of town, but their prices are in the 1500+ range no matter if you are a little stuck or buried to the roof line.

A contact number would be a good thing to post to refer to later.

To those interested, I can PM my number, not too big on posting my # on the interweb.

I understand, I'm sorry I thought this was your business:o

I was trying 5 years ago to break into it but it's not a lucrative business in the desert, so I still have an overbuilt truck, I enjoy being on the trail, I enjoy surprising people with where you can stuff a 4 door long bed on 38's, and I also enjoy helping people.

you should hook up with Blazers :hillbilly:

I go out quite a bit alone (the family have resigned themselves to this). I have a linear on my CB which will reach to West Texas, but since I switched to Verizon, I find I can get a cell signal in some of the most remote places imaginable in this state.

the only time I got stuck was in a minivan

(not Ross - insider joke)

really, I did :hillbilly:

when I wasn't able to get it unstuck myself, I took my water and juice and walked towards town.....

15 minutes later I happened upon two pickup trucks, and one of the guys helped to get the minivan out of the rut

and since it was early enough in the day, I continued onto some 35 more miles of dirt road/trail  :steer:
