What’s the best ride quality tire to install on oem 16s that’s still capable offroad? Looking at 315/75/R16.

Do ATs ride better than MTs? I’ve only had E-rated K02s on my cars so not much to compare them with. Will see lots of highway driving and medium rated offroad trails.

AT's ride better, are quieter and last longer than MT's. If you don't need the traction then go with the AT. If you want a little more traction look at a hybrid AT. I've run two sets of Mickey Thompson hybrids (Baja ATZP3 and currently Baja Legend EXP) and have been very happy with both as an all around good tire.

I have run the KO2 in the past and currently running the Yokohama MT. Both are E rated tires, it is possible to find D rated tires in that size but most are E.

The top tire companies like Toyo, Yokohama, Cooper, Nitto etc are all E rated.

The Milestar Patagonia, Kumho are D rated. Not a lot of choice as you can see. But that was a quick scan on discount tire/america tire website.

If you can afford new wheels the new Toyo Open Country RT trail is available in a D2 rating but 305/70/17.

I say stick with what works.... I'm a BFG man so... I say stick with the KO2 or the new KO3

Did you mean to post up in the 80 section when you own a 100? :)

Since you live in IL, MOST if not all of your time will be spent on the hwy so I'd stick with AT tires. There's nothing worse than listening to MT tires roaring away for hours while sucking down the fuel. Philosophically, I tend to buy tires for the 98% usage, which for the most of us is driving to the trailhead before airing down.

As far as tire choices, do a search to see what the latest trend is. Everyone has their favorite, and often times it comes down to what your wallet can afford. I'm on my 3rd set of Falken wildpeak AT3s (P metric) on the 4runner and a second set of Nitto Ridgegrapplers (LT)on the 80. The Nittos hummms from the beginning and now getting louder as they're really worn but they do their job well when climbing rocks and waterfalls. The 80 is a dedicated wheeling/camping rig.

Toyo RT Trail will fill the gap between highway and true “offroad”. If you are talking about fire roads as “offroad”, your KO2s will be fine.

Pretty sure the BFG KO is by far the largest selling A/T tire in the world and has been for decades. This means they have the largest budget for designing a top quality assembly process. Based on your similar logic, I put these on both 80s 4 years ago and they have been perfect for that need. I wanted to get the traction I needed by airing down on the trails and the proven heavy sidewalls allow me to do that without worrying about a sidewall tear as they're designed for it.

I work for the largest tire and wheel retailer in the US. I personally stopped running BFG's years ago as I never liked their ride as they aged.

Nitto Ridge Grapplers are on my 80 and Power Wagon. Not great in ice and snow for stopping, otherwise very impressed with them over the years.

Do you actually need a larger tire than stock? Worse gas mileage, braking, and handling when you go larger.

Nothing wrong with a bigger tire if you will use it. But you can do a lot with the stock sizes.

KO2s are pretty good, and can be had with the factory 16" size of 270/70R16. Firestone Destination X/Ts are nice (may have to do 265/75R16, which is a hair taller and a hair narrower than stock).

ATs will almost always ride better than MTs. Another consideration is noise. Some MTs are noisy, or get very noisy once worn in. The noise can vary from mildly annoying to maddening.

In general, the lower the rating of the tire (E, D, C, XL, etc), the better it will ride. It may be less "tough," though.

I ran Milestar Patagonia M/T tires for a little over 7 years, In the beginning i was happy with them, but as they got older, and the tread got hard, they became VERY loud at highway speeds, They all so have a VERY BAD habit of tread chunking, In the 7 years i owned them i had to replace 3 tires because of tread chunking, I just switched over to a set of M/S Goodyear wranglers size 265/75 R16 load range E,

MIlestar is a budget Chinese tire brand, they are not great offroad, but for the money, you get what you paid for. I wouldn't put any chinese aftermarket parts in my 80s and tires are important for very obvious reasons. ATs are great for overlanding type offroad, With that said, Nittos MTs or Baja MTs are probably some of the best offroad tires out there IMO.

Falken a/t4w e rated
This! Great tires in high demand. Quiet and lots of siping. I’m an American made kinda guy so trying these was a step out but I’m well pleased.

No, Milestars are not made in China, in fact they are made in Indoesia, it says so right on the sidewall of the tire, But i still get your point about them being inexpensive tires

Ive had BFG AT's for decades on 60 and 80 series.
My '92 Hilux has Nitto Trail Grapplers for 5 years. So happy with 'em I've now got them on my 80. They look big posing on the 98 Hilux just for the pic but digging them so far on the 80 as well.

I've been very happy with my Falken M/T's....that said my truck is not a daily and they make a lot more road noise than my BFG A/T's do.

I'm a BFG man.... Big fan of the KM3. Good on pavement, and great off road.

What kind of mileage are you getting out of the KM3?
I’m very hard on my tires. I run 37’s on beadlocks. I rock crawl at 8 to 10 psi regularly. Air them up and do a lot of Hwy driving too. I usually get new tires every 5 years.

Since no one has tossed out Cooper Tires here goes, I’m in year 3 on AT3 XLT’s. My 80 is a DD that gets wheeled about 4 times a year, these tires are fantastic on road and have surprised me off-road. I have KM3’s on the 40 and KO2’s on the 100, I’ll definitely be going with Coopers on the 100 next time.
