Ultimate Suspension 411

While we're all being objective about 100-Series suspension systems and sub-systems ;) just thought I'd bring this to your collective attention.

The current (July/August 2010) issue of 4WD Toyota Owner has a must read for anyone wanting to know all about the physics at play on all things suspension: "The Ultimate Suspension 411".

Don't snooze on picking this issue up...you'll thank me later ;-)

I really need to subscribe to that magazine

Why do you say that?

You do need to change the lower bushing on the ProComp but you need to do it also on N74L:meh:

Do you need 3" lift like on the n74l to mount on a 100? or will the procomps work with the 866's that I have now?

Ooo, I like those trail types too!

Really? Cool! we have this little LandCruiser run on this trail once a year. And every TLCA member is invited! We even have a Wagon run, for the wagons, were we take our time and choose the easy lines. You could probably show us old iron folks how to really wheel, I bet.

Hey, pighead's FJ55 front, solid-axle pic was new - though not terribly relevant...

I have rarely been accused of being relevant. Sometimes I just like to pop in and rattle cages....
That is a new pic, thanks for noticing.

That's a 35-inch tire WAY DOWN THERE. That's no 33 or 32 or 31 or..... :D

35-inch tires?!? WAY DOWN THERE?!?! Stop it, you're scaring me!

So come wheeling with us Shotts. What's that other old saying?
Put up or STFU? something like that...

Tell me why you need 3" of lift to run N74L, that a new one for me.

Okay, okay I have subscribed, went to four bookstores last week looking for it.
The contributing editor that runs a 100 (nice rig) ran Fin & Things at Cruise Moab this year for a total of seven 100 on the run. Did that get any coverage in the magazine?

sorry for mentioning your name in this next one, Shotts

but Shotts post from one of his n74l threads says that you need at least 3" of lift to run the n74l's

4WD Toyota Owner is the best 4x4 magazine I've ran across, and not just because it's Toyota genre specific. It also doesn't hurt that the editor drives a 80 LC and one of the contributing authors drives a 100 LC! :D

So you can run n74l's without 3" of lift, but what are the consequences of using the n74l's with only 2.5" or 2" lift?

It was high level coverage. I thought, given the size of the event, there would have been more photos and storyline...

I thought with the longer N74L's you need more lift so under normal stance you won't over compress the shocks?!?

Absolutely, not sure where he came up that one.

alrighty then... I'm off for a few days of hiking with the Scouts. Gonna have the 100 loaded up with 5 people, gear, and pulling a trailer. First trip with the airbags fully functional. Should be a good test of how much pressure to run to compensate for the load. I currently have old, saggy, wonderfully-cushy OEM springs with a 30mm spacer, and brand new OEM shocks, plus Air-Lift bags. No chumming for trolls in here...

Ok.. I haven't read this whole thread but i can clarify the last few posts... My truck is running a 4in lift, and shocks that would normally be in a 6in lifted truck... The idea came from a friend with a 2in lift and running 4in shocks...There is on way the shocks will ever compress whilst the articulating axle is at it's biggest angle.... The shocks i'm running compress all the way to the bump stops.....Have a look at the first picture. As John said "look at the pictures they don't lie" The wheel is all the way up in the guard.... You can see the rear axle starting to turn (rear steer) This is due to to the trailing arms being standard.. Also you will notice the sway bar is removed to help with the "droop" of the axle......

The 100 series 5 link rear suspension is very similar in design to the 105 series... Do what i did, go to your nearest trail find a shady spot under a tree and remove your rear shocks and unbolt the sway bar.. (there are after market sway bar disconnectors on the market) Your car will drive like s#@t but flex it up and see what it's capable off... Then go off that.. IMOA the more wheels on the ground the further the truck will go... And it looks good:D Try it out you might be surprised.. Have a close look at the photo's
Phil ill get that Model no for you, ill send a PM

Ya, the options for 80's and 105's sure are plentiful. Wish we could use all the same gear and tricks on the 100. At least we can use some.

And yes, I can relate to the "rear steer". Suspension geometry is an amazing science! On this topic...I could have kept my WWOR lower arms that were extended length that would compensate for the axle placement and and pinion angle however the compressed wheel was a bit too far rearward and rubbed my Slee Bumper badly. So I had to have them resend me OEM length arms which still work great. On a 100 with a custom rear bumper the extended lower arms would be ideal with the N74L shocks and 3-inch lift.

With standard arms, 3" lift and L's you can hear a bit of tire rub on the rear bumper as I lift-off on the second half of this video:

We've been discussing the UZJ/IFS options on this thread.

Options for the 105 do not compare unless you limit the discussion to 105 kits that max out at 2.5-3.0 inches lift.

As soon as you show options like these shocks for the 105/80 series at 4-inches and up lift height all comparisons are off. Things become non-compatible. Now IF some front IFS kit came out that allowed for 4+" lift then we could mate-up these shocks THEN. Today...not an option.
