I received 5 cases from the last shipment; they all looked good.

Georg,

Yours all look good as in they don't look like the one I received? I just need to know if this is normal. The notch in the case definitely isn't deep enough for the thrust washer detent piece.

Thanks

I'd email that pic to the guys at AA. To me it doesn't look "right".
Hopefully they have a replacement case they can send you if need be.

Yeah I'll touch base with them tomorrow. Kind of a let down after 2-1/2 months ha ha. Thanks for the input!

Their customer service & support is really good. I'm sure they'll take care of you.

Well after sending them pictures, AA has stated the case is machined fine and the thrust washer will get oil. I will push forward getting the case assembled. Thanks for your input everyone.

Good to hear!

You should be able to easily drop that thrust washer in the case and verify it sits flush all the way around it's surface before dropping the idler gear in.

Clean surfaces outside of a bit of flash rust:

If it really bugs you, a few minutes with a die grinder will get you a pretty similar result.

Yes I filed it a little bit to get it to seat better. Just a little bummed about the QC that let this case slip through the cracks, with the machining issue.

If AA said it was ok, then it was...ok. That doesn’t mean you’re not entitled to think for yourself and consider if something else is better. I have bought many other brand new, out-of-the-box things in my life that I have seen fit to tinker with before using/ installing. I am particularly unhappy with the factory tolerances on Chevy clutches for instance.

FWIW could check the overall dimension before assembly so you dont put it all together and have it overly loose, or tight for that matter.
IMO clean out those channels.

Assembling @Spike Strip Orion now. The channels were 100% normal.

Getting there ....

@65swb45 can add details. Dropped off a NOS H41 for inspection and mating.... Converting a column-shift '68 FJ40 to a 4-on-the-floor.

Where did you get a new old stock H41?

I think it is well time to explore using WPC Treatment in these old schoolers. The rear output shaft would be first on my list if I was building an Orion today. Also the thrust surfaces of the output gears. My 15BFT is seeing it in multiple places.

I believe it was overseas Andy.

Remember that motor you helped @NLXTACY bring up from Sandy Eggo, the one with the habitrail in the cylinder head? Well it’s a good thing I make a routine out of regasketing the rear extension covers.

I had pulled the top cover off, and when I felt excessive resistance to spinning the mainshaft, I figured there must be cosmoline on the gears. After spending 20 minutes fishing wood chips and straw out of the rear main bearing, the transmission spun smoothly.:)

The threaded end of the tailshaft also had to be dressed with a thread file before a locknut would go on.

The combo should be ready tomorrow. Finished @SW20 today. Will be starting on Gabriel’s tomorrow.

Wow. And I thought I got all the wood out -- Damn fiberboard !

If I don't sell my FJ40 this year, I'm going in search of a NOS H41. It would be great with the Orion and all Toyota.Too bad the USA didn't get H41s. Nice and short, decent low gear, perfect now. Maybe not in the day when they were daily drivers.
