Alright then, I surrender. How about the interior? Your pickup bench sounds intriguing.

That front bumper is awesome! I love the combination of tube and small pieces of plate. I want one!

jajajaja I owe you guys a picture of the interior , because right now the truck is in the shop getting prepared for a 1600 mile trip no pavement arround , not even gas!!, about the sliders there are under construction , because in one off our trips the lower panel got a little damage ... I will upload some pictures as soon as I can!

Here in Australia I have either seen, Driven or owned the following (I worked in a Toyota Dealer for 8 Years)

DX - 1HZ Diesel base model. Vinyl Seats & floor, Bucket and 3/4 Seats in front (no console) Barn Doors, No Flares, Wind up windows, crappy radio, skinny wheels etc etc also avail in 1fz petrol

GX - similar to above, but with carpet floor, fabric seats, two piece tailgate. These were usually "limited" models only avail at certain times and depending on what toyota where offering at the time as to what was included. (ie some had flares or maybe just power windows)

GXL (most popular model)- 1HZ (man trans only - although have seen a few RARE Auto's) 1HD (man or aut) 3f (man or Auto until 1993)1fz man or auto. As above with flares, side moulds, power win, Fabric Seats, CD (after 1995) Wide Wheels, 3rd row seats, two piece tail gate, etc
These also had some some limited models, where they would throw a few extra goodies in, ie sunroof, alloy wheels, velour seats, a cup holder in the dash, colour matched flares etc

VX - sahara - 1hd or Petrol varients Autos only, however I have seen a few early Manuals poking around. All the goodies, fridge, climate control, velour until 1993 then leather seats, Cd Stacker frt and rear diff locks single semi sealed headlights with washers, dual air con etc etc

Any other aussies chime in if i have anything wrong.

Dave

Is the GX the one that had the RV decals on them or was that another spec. From menory they were similar to the GXL but without a few of the extras.

Hi Aussie Cruiser

Yeh, I have seen RV's with and without GX badges. Similar to GXL, minus wide wheels, flares, side moulds, and power windows. Seen them in both Petrol and std diesel varients.
Have a good Christmas.

Probably the biggest difference between the lower end models (STD, DX) and the more upmarket ones (GXL, VX/Sahara) in the Australian market at least, is the base models are part time 4WD. More like a 70/80 series hybrid as far as running gear goes.

DX (base model) = Vinyl floor covering and door trims. No centre console (because of the bench front seat). No third row seats. No gas struts to hold the bonnet up. Minimal sound deadening insulation. No STD LSD or difflock, just open diffs. One piece rear side windows.

They do come with the sub tank though. The fuel gauge for the sub on a DX is in the dash not on the roof(it takes the place of the tacho. As they were not constant 4WD they came with free wheeling hubs on the front.

If I can over the next two weeks I will park my GXL next to my brothers DX and compair the differences for you.

Here are a couple of Aus reviews for you, both on the gxl.

Wow loving the front bumper. Have any build pictures? Or specs on the size tube, etc.

You also mentioned a custom rear bumper. I would love to see it as well!

If you want details, it depends on the market. There's no SET difference between the two (ie one has barn doors, one doesn't etc.) since these can change between regions.

Reader's digest difference is VX is the highest trim level and contains all the available options (minus a few details here and there depending on the original buyer). GX has a selected number of options depending on the original buyer.

My experience is with the middle east market where there are G, GX, GX-R, VX, and VX-R trim levels.

Hi from Oz,
The 80s in the market here are split into four groups essentially by code.

STD encompassing the DX, 1HZ barn doors on the rear, bucket and bench seats no third row seating. Vinyl trim. No carpet but some dx did Manual windows, no tacho, no flares, skinny wheels, no overhead console with sub gauge and altimeter. Part time transfer

RV, GX maybe by vin code, never seen one badged as that, all 1fz petrols as far as I can tell. All badged as RV. All manual. Carpet, overhead console etc etc. All same as GXL bar flares side skirts, wide wheels. Has the. LUB (lift up back door) not barn doors as STD. Dash has the tacho. Sub tank gauge in roof console etc. Most were manual mirrors and windows but it was an option to go electric. Full time transfer case.
this is what I have in the drive.

GXL the main seller in our market. As described elswhere, had options of all engine and trans combos, all full time transfer, electric windows all flared all had the wide wheel option etc

Sahara / VX the luxury version with all listed previously but with all the electrics, fridge console, leather, trim, some had the nicer level cloth, rear ac all the good stuff. Near a 100k car when new. Should all have been sold as sahara at least post 93 but there are some jdm vx imports getting around that confuse the issue

I am looking to buy a 80 series but was not sure if the GX is better or VX better....

Both are equally difficult to find...
