Noise in third ??? (1 Viewer)

I have an '82 FJ40 with 115K on it. I'm hearing a whining noise in third gear while Accelerating. It seems to be coming from the rear end but I'm not positive - could be the transmission. It seems to only occur at low RPM's in third and doesn't happen in other gears. Any ideas?

If the noise only happens in third gear I would suspect the transmission. What happens if you coast? Either way 4 speeds and 3:70 third members are cheap and plentiful. If you look around you could find either for $100 or less.

If it only makes noise in 3rd gear; chances are it is a worn 3rd gear in the tranny. It is no big deal and you could get another 100,000 miles out of it whining like that.
