G'day all,

Well just to begin, I'm pretty sure I've read every thread regarding Scan guage II and ODB II ports.

Although I'm "NOW" having trouble finding that particular thread on location of OBDII and OBD1 (it stated the difference and the locations.)

And I never read that any 80 in year 96 and younger didn't have OBDII port

So I'm pretty sure my 80 doesn't have the ODBII port :crybaby: which is P!ssing me off seeing I already bought the scangauge II

I know I should've checked before getting it, but I was confident that because everything I read said it had it, and that my car was in the workshop for a month because of a HG, I wanted the scanguage II to fit so I can keep any eye on all the vitals.

So here is my questions
Can I make a scanguage II fit an ODB1 port, by making some adaptor up?
and if not:

The motor and build of the car should be identical to any other 96 model that has the OBDII port. Can I fit a 96 computer that will have the ODBII configuration?

You might need an "adaptor" consisting of the USA spec ECU and associated wiring harness.

Is this available?

already been on the OBD II in 95, (and posted there)

Thanks I've used Mark's 4WD adaptors before on 85 4runner with v8 motor, and I just saw the odbII interface they were talking about, will give them a call in regards, thanks for your help

I still can't see why I couldn't just replace the computer with an ODBII compliant one, it still is the same engine and still has all the sensors etc.

Will call marks 4WD adaptors and maybe some auto electricians, will let you all know how I go, thanks all for the info you have provided. Oh does anyone know where the main computer is?

I think he was making a joke, that you could have OBDII if you install a US ECM and the entire associated engine/chassis wiring harness (thousands of dollars in parts, and quite a bit of work).

I was not entirely joking. It might be possible to get it to work by using a USA spec ECU and the OBDII specific wiring harness.

Seriously how different can it be?

I almost feel like should just be able to plug in an ODBII compatible computer in the current harness.

Maybe? I would start by checking the part numbers for the USA and non-US ECUs and the connector pin-outs on the wiring diagrams.

i would wonder about the programming in the ecus (not being a computer genius). there are parameters for emissions that other countries don't have to worry about, so you'd constantly be throwing a code if you don't have the emissions crap there, and would that effect the way the rig ran.

something to look into.

This is still bothering me, I should be able to get an ODBII Australian complaint computer for 80 series even 97 model when they did start in Australia and worst case the entire wiring harness to go with it.

Is there any engine differences at all?
Manual gearbox

Sorry to revisit this again.
Any help would be greatful

OBD2 uses lots of sensors that aren't required for OBD1, I would be very surprised if the OBD1 vehicle has all these sensors equipped from factory as the ecu would not require them or be able to monitor them all, let alone use their inputs in any meaningful way. Being able to connect a scanguage2 is really the ONLY advantage to the far more complicated OBD2 system, there's so much more to go wrong. Simple is better.

Sell your Scangauge and buy some aftermarket gauges to accomplish your goals.

Wish mine was a OBD-I computer. Less sensor and emission devices to go wrong. Trust me I know,,,,, I replaced mine,,,, lol

OBD1 and OBD2 are apples and oranges... If you don't have an OBD2 port, I can't imagine it will be very simple or inexpensive to put in something that will work with a scangauge. To me, the real question then becomes whether it's even worth to bother with all that, just cuz you have bought a $130 scangauge. Sure they're nice to have, but how many of us (me included) have done just fine without the SG? And how many more could not be bothered? Maybe easier to sell your NIB SG for $100 to somebody who can make ready use of it and just go on your merry SGless way?

Have to say very interesting, I guess using apps in android devices and scangauge II etc maybe a bit over the top, when I can just buy additional gauges for all the sensors etc. like the water temp as the 80 series Landcruiser temp gauge is crap in completely inaccurate

Torque for Android or SC2 are very cool if you have an OBD2 vehicle already, but converting to OBD2 from OBD1 is completely not worth it. Check out these units for adding gauges to your truck:

Why? In your original post it was to monitor coolant temps. Lots of solutions for that without converting to ODB2.

Given the age of the ECU I would go stand alone for the most options (speed density) and fully tune the ECU.

Enjoy the simplicity of your cruiser, not having a computer for fuel/air ratios or injection system is a blessing in my mind.

The big things that would be nice to have with scan gauge is coolant temp, trans temp, knock sensor and check the engine codes. You can add two of those gauges, and hear for the third and avoid having some extra electronics. As well, your scan gauge wont have a pyro, and maybe not a boost (if you have a diesel. which you havent specified)

If you really want an OBD II compliant system then it's time for you to buy a wrecked commodore and do the LS1 conversion you've always wanted
