Something I still have not figured out about driving an automatic is how to shift between drive reverse and park without looking at the shifter. After driving a stick shift for the last 30 years I still find this lack of feel bothersome.I really dislike the lack of a distinct shift pattern and the fact that I have to take my eyes off the trail when shifting.

I, too, just starting driving an automatic after years of driving only stick, but it ain't rocket surgery. 1 down, reverse; 2 down, neutral; 3 down drive.

No D at 297000

Mine is out now at 297000K. Actualy, there are a lot of things that are out of it with this many miles on it. What a great way to spend my money!

Hmm I would like to slap the dash but the problem is that all the cracks in the dash may end up in the floor.

It was lighting dim until it couldn't go no more.

I went ahead and gave my dash a swift whack tonight and "voila", I have a lighted "D". Kind of reminds me of my '90 4Runner. I used to have to whck the dash to bring back one of the dash lights.

bought it at 110k no D-light,
funny story;
I'm driving it home from the guy's house I bought it from and call my cruiser buddy who sort of turned me on to the obsession, he says "what gear are you in" ... "what do you mean?" ...."look at the dash tell me if you are in drive or what " ...I look at the dash... " ummm... "

"so I guess this is pretty common then huh?"

"yep, i got replacements on the counter"

still need to put that in, have had it since day one.

I bought mine at around 89K no "D" ... 94K now still no "D"... 1994 LC

I'm gona slap her around today see what happens...

I was "D" less until today at 162K. I gave the cluster a few raps with the knuckles and got the GREEN D

Bought my one-owner, locked 96 with 51K miles and no "D" light.

All of the other gear indicators light up; I figured it was designed to not light up in "D".

Now with 89K and still no "D" light. It doesn't bother me and I sure wouldn't pull the dash apart to fix it.

On a mates 97 fzj80 it went out the other week at 430 xxx k's when he asked me about it i was thinking all 80 series had all globes bar the D ,but my brothers 97 fzj80 D light has never worked and he got that with 60,000 k's

Mine has been intermittent for many years, probably started at 75K (at about 160K now). I find that if I push the shifter forward while in Drive just a mm, the light will come back on. Sometimes stays for a while then out again the next time it is shifted. Haven't bothered in a while so have to check next time to see if it is still the sensor alignment on the lever or it is burned out.

Sweet! I just smacked the crap out of mine too, and now I've got a "D" light again.:D It's been out since I bought the truck. It IS lit at a lower intensity than the others. I'd much rather have it working than not, after seeing it lit up now. Hope it lasts!

Mine hasn't been lit for my ownership, I have 237K and enjoy the silent D feature.
