Let me see if I can clear up this permit issue. There are two choices you can be a licensed hunter with a WMA permit or buy the OHV day use permits. Their OHV permits are priced high as they want to sell licenses because they get a Federal kick back from the federal tax that is hidden in the price you pay for shooting and fishing supplies. Either way you go you can buy online or at a store that sells licenses. Only one person in the vehicle needs a permit, if you will have a youth with you you can save money by buying the youth license.

Here are the fees:

North Cumberland Special Use Permits
These permits may be purchased for horseback riding, bicycling, and ORV use. Youths under age 13 and persons holding a valid annual or permanent hunting license with a valid permit to hunt on these areas are exempt. At least one occupant of an enclosed vehicle must possess the proper permit(s). No permit shall be required on certain roads/trails as designated.
TYPE DESCRIPTION COST
035 Resident Annual Permit $61.00
036 Resident Daily Permit $12.50
037 Non-Resident Annual Permit $191.00
038 Non-Resident Daily Permit $30.50

001 Hunting and Fishing Combination*
Minimum license required to fish and/or hunt small game $28

*Supplemental Licenses (Types 005, 009, 010, or 011) are required and must be purchased, in addition to the Type 001 license, in order to hunt deer, bear, boar (feral hog), turkey, and waterfowl.

The type of hunting equipment to be used determines which supplemental license is necessary.

Nonresident Hunting Licenses
Anyone who does not qualify for a resident license must purchase the appropriate nonresident license(s) to hunt in Tennessee. These do not include WMA or special season permits.
TYPE DESCRIPTION COST
070 Junior Hunt/Fish - No Big Game
Required for nonresidents ages 13-15 to fish or hunt small game.
A Type 085 or 086 is required to hunt big game. $9.00
085 7-Day Junior Hunt - All Game $25.00
086 Annual Junior Hunt - All Game $40.00
072 7-Day Hunt-Small Game/Waterfowl - No Big Game $50.50
071 Hunt-Small Game/Waterfowl - No Big Game $91.00
074 7-Day Hunting - All Game $175.50
073 Annual Hunting - All Game $251.00
120 Trapping $401.00

Wildlife Management Area Permits
Everyone who hunts on a Wildlife Management Area is required to have a WMA permit except the holder of a Lifetime Sportsman License, Annual Sportsman License, Annual Senior Citizen Permit (Type 167), and youths under age 16 hunting small game and waterfowl. The youth hunters must be accompanied by an adult with a valid WMA permit. Youths under age 6 may not hunt big game on a WMA. All ages need a Type 094 permit for county non-quota hunts.
TYPE DESCRIPTION COST
091 WMA Small Game and Waterfowl $51.00
092 1-Day Small Game and Waterfowl $10.50
093 WMA Small Game Only $17.00
094 Special Season/WMA Nonquota Big Game
Valid for all County Special Season non-quota and WMA non-quota big game hunts, including Cherokee. $21.00
095 Cherokee WMA Big Game Nonquota
Valid only for Cherokee WMA non-quota big game hunts. $16.00

Jesus. That is confusing.
The bottom line is:

$30.50 per day out of state to ride (#038) or a one time fee of $28 for your annual hunting/fishing combo (#001) (it does not say if that is in state or out of state above) will also allow you to ride...

Right?

I am not seeing any nearby repeaters other than Knoxville.
Use of repeaters require having a Ham Lisc. if you catch my drift...

[/FONT]
Dumb question since I am new to all this....
No tone?

THere is a bit of a cheaper way for GA folks.
I bought a small game lisc. 7 day for $50 and a WMA permit for $16.
total cost was $69 (including a transaction fee).
I bought at
https://www1.tn.wildlifelicense.com/start.php
That was the cheapest option for the privilege code 072 (7 day small game) and 093 for the WMA area. It also covers the shooting range if we stop.

Hopefully that clears it up at least for us GA boys...

Cool. Now let me do the math...what is today

Navigating that website is probably as difficult as getting health insurance. I have not seen things much worse.

You have this?
Every person born on or after January 1, 1969, before hunting shall possess, in addition to all other licenses and permits required, proof of satisfactory completion of an agency approved hunter education course

I don't.
I guess it comes down to just trying to do the right thing.... and then badging your way out of trouble when the guy tells you you don't have the proper permit.

As confusing as this is, we better have the best answer for folks before GSMTR. There will be hundreds of questions unless we can tell people to go to X website and purchase #abc and #def license.

Yes, you are right. No tone for simplex operation. Usually only for repeaters.
Any of the freq we posted are like CB radio, just punch in the Frequency and have at it.

For programming repeaters, there are 3 key things
1. frequency
2. offset (+ or -)
3. Repeater access mode and tone (CTCSS)

For repeaters, say this one...
you enter the programing mode.
1) enter the frequency below,
2) Enter offset: most offsets are either positive or negative (below it is a negative offset (see 145.39-) the - means the freq transmits on a lower freq that the receive. ie, you receive signal on 145.390 and transmit on 144.790 (typically a 600hz offset)
this one

145.39 - W4AM 107.2 Chattanooga Tennessee Has autopatch
3) Then you have to set the repeater access mode and tone (CTCSS) in this case it is 107.2

Please see for a great easy to read overview http://www.w4qr.org/files/repeater-basics_jon-perelstein.pdf

Does that help?

I do not have the education course, but I am exempt due to age... dang it sucks getting old. I would call the the TN folks at 1-615-781-6500 and see what they say.

The $28 license is resident.
For non residents the most straight forward way is the $30.50 per day. This is what I will recommend to folks for GSMTR as they will only be in the WMA 2 days.

Thanks for the confirmation. Been doing my reading. I have the short study guide too - lots of words in that
I think the podcast study guide is no longer available.

I am not exempt from the hunter safety course requirement by one year. I tell you what, if that is what they find fault with I will have to just explain how my jurisdiction does not end at the park gate.

if anyone wants the HAM podcasts let me know. I can burn them to cd for ya.

I found this:
https://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com/study.jsp

Looks about my speed - small words and big letters. :D

I would like to have that podcast, I could load it to an FTP site and make it available for download.

I downloaded "Chirp" and programmed my radio. It no longer says "WELCOME" when I turn it on - it says "HEIFER" and I can hear NOAHH so I must be on the right track. I actually think these are in the spectrum and have the capability to receive and transmit on my work freqs. Our security keys stopped working years ago so we transmit in the clear and our frequencies and PL codes can be found all over the internet. The catch is that most of our repeaters are for s*** and our radios are line of sight at best. Ahh, the government.
