Do we have a time and place yet? Just curious so we can plan our New Years Day. Wife wants to go to mom's for dinner...

Not that my vote counts for anything...but I'd love to check out the Jemez/Cuba area.

Steve needs to chime in. He knows that area well and there has to be someplace relatively low that won't have 10 feet of snow.

I won't mind the less than 10 feet of snow since I haven't bought chains yet. Still thinking about that snowboard idea being towed :smokin: . Either way I wil throw the old one in the truck.

Just repaired the three broken links from the last run. Inspected the chains and found 4 more links cracked at the welds and ready to break. Working on getting apart and welding back together.:wrench: Hoping to make it on the run.

Good job chickie. I found two links that broke the welds and were about to spread. Quick tack weld did the trick.

When and where is everyone meeting? Any decisions on where the run is going to be yet?

Looking forward to the run!

I think I am going to have to pass too, unless Santa delivers a late Christmas gift! I think my water heater finally crapped out (I think that thing is older than almost any one of you guys  !). Cold showers are fun in the morning (really wakes you up)! I will see how it goes tommorow.

The guys that are going will have plenty of shackles to borrow so don't worry if you can't pick up one of those before the trip. The most important thing is to have proper recovery points. This was an issue on the Christmas tree run and created a long delay that otherwise would have been a 5 min tug with a strap.

There is a place on Pan American (the feeder road for I-25). I think it is called Wisco supply. It is on the East side of I-25 somewhere between Menaul and Montgomery. I think it is close to Comanche. Google is your friend. They carry Crosby shackles in a variety of sizes. Their prices were reasonable when I have been there (6 years ago...) Another alternative is Desert Rat and 4Wheel parts but theirs might be jeep-sized and not what you need for a 100-Series or an 80-Series.

At this point, who is going, where? Also, which place has the best price on D rings in town?.. I need two for my front recovery points.

Go to Western Tractor on 2nd street north of Lomas. They have top quality in many sizes.

So...what are the details on the run?

Yeah, we need to firm things up. Beyond meeting place and time a destination is required also, obviously. From years past we know that most of the Jemez district will be "closed" and that's why we always end up in the Cuba district where the trails are more likely really snowy at this point, meaning a hard core run and farther drive.

If we really want a stocker friendly run I suggest the Caja. There will either be mud or snow or most likely both and the routes we have taken in the past have offered snow challenges even in drier years. Either start at the landfill south of SF and come down La Bajada or go up La Bahada and reconnoiter. Sorry Jon, but either way I think it's closer (or faster) than the Jemez if we have to end up in the Cuba district.

Juane printed out a map of our various routes attempted there that I'll bring if that's the choice to avoid back tracking.

I would suggest a north portal meeting at 9 and then caravan to either entrance point. It might be fun to observe the NM 4 wheelers if they are still making that run.

My .02

If you think you need two D shackles, then get four :D

La Caja trail is great for stockers up top of the ridge. If you're starting at the landfill and then making your way up the canyon then stockers will not make it due to snow, and some big rocks under the snow. Snow may be deep and chain saws may have to be utilized to clear the path. Stockers with no rear locker or oem size tires will hit their undercarriage at the canyon bottom/wash area. 80's with side steps and 285s are guaranteed to tag some rocks hidden under the snow. Coming out of the wash will be difficult if the snow is deep and if you have no rear chains and no lifts.

I'd suggest a trail run that the stockers can have fun w/o getting stressed out and end up in the middle of multiple winch sessions.

We need to remember when our vehicles were stock and how low they used to be. :D

My .02 cents.

Ali,

Which Caja trail are you talking about? You're not talking about tank trap are you? The classic "Caja Trail" is not that tough.

Yeah Ali's route was not at all the route I was thinking of. What we've done in the past with stockers stays almost entirely on top of the mesa, looping past Tetilla Peak, with only one little hill climb in a drainage. Wish I had an electronic copy of Juane's map...
