No. It has fluid. I just topped it off a few weeks ago.

You think it is the trans huh? I was thinking mor along the lines of transfer case. I will see if the parking barke moves.
I am thinkg that I need a new (used) trans and transfer case.

Rear driveshaft shouldn't vibrate. If you were to grab the parking drum can you move it in and out or back and forth?

My bet is your 3spd tranny is going out.

Sure there is oil in it?

Grabbed the parking drum. Did not move. Grabbed the foward driveshaft at the transfer case and it moves a lot. Decided to drain the fluid. See attached pics. Looks like glitter in the oil.

So the new question is : a prez of a local landcruiser club has a three speed and transfer case for 100. He said he thinks it is in good shape but I am free to look at it. What am I looking for? Would it be better to have my s*** rebuilt?

If its as yellow as it looks then its clearly brass, no need for a magnet.

If thats just the oil making it look yellow, give it the magnet treatment. If it sticks, its iron. If it doesn't stick, hit it with a torch - if it melts quickly and boils its lead, melts slowly but doesn't boil its aluminum, doesn't melt its steel.

Well I'd trust the pres of the cruiser club. That being said I'd open the used unit up and look at the gears and make sure they are all there. Then check for slop in the input shaft on the tranny and the two output shafts and look for rust. Given all that is good you might get lucky.

First I'd get what you have out and inspect it.

Thats not a normal amount of flakes is it?

No

How Can you tell if this is bearing material or case material? Magnet?
AT this point it doesn't matter your going to need rebuild it or replace it.

When you said it vibrated in neutral made makes me think the trans is not in good shape also. But who the heck knows. Your gonna have to take the tcase off the trans is right there. Also might as well replace the clutch while you have it all apart.

Work

Pulled it all. Trans has some teeth missing. I ended up getting a used unit that looks pretty good.
I am replacing the t.o. bearing, pilot bearing, pressure plate, clutch, and resurficing the flywheel. Also putting in new u joints. My flywheel looks like it has tiny cracks in it. IS that normal? I have attached pics. Will I be able to resurface this flywheel or do I need a new one?

Can some explain what stepping the flywheel means as well? Should the shop know what that means?

Some *light* cracking might be considered normal - I can't see from your pictures how bad it is. short hairline cracks are likely to be ground away when resurfacing - your shop will tell you if the flywheel is beyond saving.

Stepping refers to the difference in height between the friction surface and the mounting surface for the spring/pressure plate - your shop will know what it means.
