Well, i finally pulled the trigger after many years of searching, near purchases, etc and found a decent project Troopy.

Loved these bad boys since my stint in Australia in 2006 and had to get my hands on one.

Without Further ado....

1980 HJ47! 289,279 km / 179,000 miles to us special needs students.
Split Rims (very cool, got some questions about these). Factory Air Con, All the bench seats, some rust I mean character and it's mine all mine!

While I'm here, Are there headlight replacements that use a bulb like on my 80 series (wouldn't mind getting some HID action.
And I'll be searching, but the split rims, how hard is it to find the tires plus someone that knows how to mount?

Cheers everyone! Stoked to finally join these ranks! Mods/Resto to follow!

I see that you have beat me to the punch on buying that nice HJ47. Good to see it at a good home. Get rid of the split rims they don't call them widow makers for a reason.

Now why would you say that? Well, actually you got it right - they don't call them widow makers. Because they are not.

is there a way to mod the splits to, well, not split? IDK thinking outloud. I love the look of them and would hate to not have em. Also, been mining though the search but having a tough time, what tire size and brand are you all running, I like the tall skinny, been looking at 235/85/16 for size.

Very nice troopy! I like the color, Nordic Blue?

If you don't want the splitties, I'll take them. ;) You could have those wheel centers put onto a non-split rim, at Stockton Wheel (not cheap), and there was a 16" non split wheel option from Toyota I hear. The part number is listed here somewhere, so that might be an option too. The 15" stock steel wheels are not incredibly expensive ($187 a wheel, IIRC) new from Toyota, so perhaps the 16" wheels wouldn't be too bad either.

Nice 47!
By being a 1980, does that mean it's an H or a 2H? Whatever the case, those are great motors.

As to the split rim debate:
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Keep the splitties as long as you can practically maintain them. If the tire shops in your area refuse to play with them, factory 15's are awesome, I'm running a set on my Hilux as we speak.

skinny for 16's

255x85x16 BFGs km2s..... just over 33 inches and 10 inches wide. I'm about to buy a set. 189.00 at tire rack.

It was built near the end of 1980 getting the 2H (at least that's what the placard says).

I'm going to run wild with the splits for the time being, just teaching for the tire to use. I think John at proffits had some 7.5 16's going out the door for 300 plus shipping. I like the 255/85 16 but there is no lift for the foreseeable future gunna try keep em a little smaller.

More pics to follow, Wednesday, and the laundry list I've been dreaming of doing! Got no sleep last night too excited.

To answer your question on light bulbs, yes. Look at the Round eyes.

7" Round Jeep® Conversion Headlamps - Jeep® Headlamps by Roundeyes™ Inc.

I used IPF lights on mine, (IPF is owned by ARB). I bought mine at 4wheelparts.com Don't fotget to buy bulbs also.

I would recommend adding a new harness with relays. I used one from Summit, but there are others out there. I think this is the one....

Cheers.

That's a 2H. The valve cover is more lumpy, as opposed to the boxy cover of the H.

I like it. 2h, thats even better .I saw a set of split rims on craig's list for sale the other day but someone beat me to them. My take is if you do a lot highway driving you don't really need them. Those farmers where I grew up at love them but in the city it true about finding people willing to work on them. But they are cool and oem most everywhere else. As far as headlights, there are lot of vendors that have some neat looking light assy's. I prefer them to be made of real glass. I'm currently running Hellas on mine but I will eventually replace them with the Code E ones and swap them back when inspection rolls around. The Hellas are not nice looking but they put out some really nice light. I got them at rallylights dot com.

I'm going to call my tire guy today and see what he says about the splits, if he won't work on em I'll have to do some thinking.

A guy i work with does HID kits on the side and runs chase for some desert racing team, so he got me the hook up on some new lenses and hid's, those'll go on Saturday afternoon.

Looooong Drive from the PO's house to mine last night going 90KmH took a few hours - enjoyed every minute of it (wishing for a stereo though).

Did my first Mod's this morning before driving it to work.

You guys running conventional or synthetic oil in yours?

You could just learn how to work on the splitties, then you can do repairs when you're in the middle of nowhere.

work work work

I've been a busy boy,

Pulled the seats and everything apart. Stripped the paint in the tub and footwells with Talstrip, sanded my heart out and did two coats of Zero-Rust and 2 coats of black herculiner and a final topcoat of grey durabak.

Today, I finally go the roof separated from the sides. A little white paint on the gutters underside where it touches the sides, prepped the rooftop, put in some sound deadener/ heat shield. Went to put the new headliner on top of that and. . .

PO's new headliner that he hadn't put in yet is a Brand New Headliner - for a 45 truck:bang:

oh well, a few more days disassembled, i was waiting on some new bits of rubber anyway. Which by the way, all the weatherstripping off this baby is in really good shape, it's all getting a bath now and a good scrubbing tomorrow arvo. It's the little things.

Split rims are not bad and they look great. If a garage has a cage they will do them or go to a place that works on transport trucks, they will do them. I had mine changed at a reg tire shop so easy.

I never heard of a split rim being called a widow maker and the shop that did mine were all over them without a cage. I asked the owner and he said look over at that truck tire, now if that blows up in your face then ya you will be hurt and it was really big.
