After reading endlessly the debate over split rims and the safety factors.... he said, she said BS, I just said **** it! I have never changed split rims before, I am going to change my own.

I read up and used this link : Split Rims

So I created this thread with pictures and step by step of my experience by myself with my HJ47 and no prior training or instruction.

I have 5 non-USA 16" split rims with OLD 12 ply re-treads, I bought 5 new BFG 255/85/r16 MT KM2's, 6 new 7.50 tubes/liners, 2 crow bars, one demo bar, soapy water, Tyre Plyers, a good hearty meal and off I went.

Start:

* Removed original tire, loosen lugs, jack truck up, jack stand etc....

* DEFLATE tire completely

* Line up and set Tyre Plyers for 16" rim.

* Step on "little" end of plyers, until seated against inside of rim between tire and rim.

* Step on "big" end (lever) side to seat plyers against rim between tire and rim, making sure that Plyers are now holding rim lip snug.

* Open "big" end of Plyers and leverage arm while keeping plyers tight on rim. You will feel the bead slip off, continue all the way around the rim until entire bead is broken, flip rim and repeat.

* Spread split ring with crow bar and slide additional bar in split ring slot. Pry ring up, once ring lip passes rim lip, pull ring off around the rim, once mine was up I was able to pull it off by hand being toughly careful.

* Split ring started removal view 2.

* With the split side of the rim up. Lift tire up at a 45 degree angle and carefully remove valve stem from rim, then tap rim out of tire onto the ground.

* Be careful when removing the liner from the tube not to tear the liner as I did by mistake.

* Most all of the tubes had been patched several times before.

* I re-used some of my liners but made sure to wash the crud off them before re-installing.

* Install the tube and liner in the tire, slide over rim placing valve stem through rim first.

* Stand on split ring in reverse order that it came off, kick step around until the ring snaps on place.

* Use an air chuck that locks onto the valve stem and stand back or behind something, air it up a little 5-10 psi, then check to make sure the ring is seated still and all looks OK, then air it up!

* Re-install

* Drink beer :beer:

* 48 psi rear tires, 45 psi fronts.

* Ps. I took off all of the weights and the tires ride great unbalanced.

* 800 mg's of Advil and a good meal.

* DONE!

Is there a little danger involved? Yes. Is there danger involved in laying underneath a car that is jacked up? Yes. Prepare, be careful and learn something new, but if you are not comfortable with any of this process then just buy some new rims.

After doing the first rim, I do not think I will ever change rims to a non-split with this truck, as I love the utility of the split rim not to mention the ease of doing it. However, after changing all 5 rims and tires.... I am a little sore the next day!

I gained a larger tire, better ride, DIY knowledge for my own piece of mind when I am far away from a tire shop, kept a unique look, original rim.... blah blah blah

The truck rides AMAZING compared to the old tires it feels like I got new shocks and springs (I can not stress this enough), and these KM2 MT's are certainly an excellent choice, much different than BFG's old mud's, quieter than my old tires, smoother, good looking, and the truck just feels/looks right at home with these 33" feet underneath.

Nice write up and job well done! Great looking rig as well.

But I think I'd run lower pressures than that for unladen use.

I got the above link in the first post from a search of yours JohnnyC, thanks. Wish I would've seen those posts too! Oh well kinda duplicate, ha!

It was fun, hard work and lots of satisfaction, to me they are just snap rings, only on rims!

Then I updated the for sale link, and now i am pretty sure I want to keep her, been driving all over now that it's smooth on my back.

I do have a lot of weight in the back and think i may land in the low to mid 30 psi range, I can't wait to lower air pressure some and feel more ride improvement! Tires say 80 psi, but I can tell by looking at the tires there is too much in there now by about 5 psi weighted down.

You must have a good technique for fitting your liners/flaps DieselFumes.

(One of my key reasons for running without mine was that I felt my wheels always needed balancing with them inside.)

I had to google "Advil" to find out what it was! (Thought it might be something for your tyres/wheels!) :lol:

Thanks! Put em back together just how I found them. Snap of ring opposite of the valve stem.

t. Kinda how I learn anyway. Took my time...

Yeah the Advil help with slipped disc in my back. But it was considered a tool for me!

Gonna throw them on a balance just to check.

255/85

Gday,
are your rims 5.5 wide I didnt think you could fit the 255/85/16 to this rim hope that this isnt the case as I would love to keep my chrome split rims and fit the 255/85/16 tires cheers for any answers as I am a bit of a tyre newb
:cheers:

did mine as well and was quite easy, I enjoyed. While airing up you could also flip the tire so ring facing down for added security if air chuck will allow it?

good write up
Rob

I am pretty sure my rims are the 16"x 5.5" wide... maybe 6" wide, but not more. I never checked width really, found a couple other posts where people had the 16" splits and ran this size. It's perfect size IMO. I will check the rim width and let you know, but don't feel that 1/2" difference will change it all that much.

NIKE = Just Do It ha ha

Roberto- Thanks

oem 16" split rims are 5.5" wide

yes i agree the 255/85r16 are a perfect fit :)

the 8.25r16 size would be a better size however....too bad its very limited in tyre choices...and the only one that agressive enough is the very hard to find michelin xzl

I didn't take any notice of your tyre size before now DieselFumes.

So you're running 255/85 R16?

Don't you find one of your tyres rubs on your draglink when you're travelling at full-lock over uneven ground?

I'd be surprised if you don't because I had this problem with my narrower 235/85 R16 tyres until I tweaked my pitman arm closer to my chassis rail.

:cheers:
