After seven months of searching all over the world I found a BJ42 that fitted my budget and wasn’t rotten in Lithuania back in May. Today it finally arrived here in the UK. 1980 BJ42, has been fully restored about 7yrs ago. There are going to be heaps of questions as my Cruiser journey over the last 30years has been mostly 70 Series..

Today I added the rear badges and reflectors. Wheels will be changed for something closer to original size. A few little things I need to do to meet UK regs then await registration.

Will change all the oils etc so I have a baseline so anyone give me info oils.. I have a copy of the service manuals and handbook so it looks like 10W 40 is the way to go. I assume a full mineral oil?

I have 5W40 full synthetic in my 3B.

I have read bad stories about putting synthetic in old engines - as it cleans them out way too well. If I had a new engine then I'm all for fully synthetic and Shell has a T6 version

I was told the same

My engine was very clean when I took the oil pan off. So no worries.

Wow.. very nice, clean engine, photos of actual metal welded in for rust repairs.. you could be on a winner!

Treat that cute little 3B like a princess and it'll look after you.. as @charliemeyer007 has noted, I've also heard of bad stories with fully synthetic oil in old diesels - but I dont know where the truth lies.. I'd stick with mineral oil.

I have some 3B and other diesel resources at my link below that might be useful for you.

@duncanrm thanks, ir does look like they dis a decent job. Every seal etc is new. There is a fair bit of bog between those panels and the paint and the paint isn’t a perfect job, konda matt but I like it and it’s going to be my daily.

Strggling to find mineral gear oil here in the UK but engine oil is available, though seems uncommon now! Not bought mineral in many years as last two Cruisers were new cars

With indonesian front flares 😎

For mineral oil , mayby the old land rover crowd in UK know where to find some
Oh is that where those originate from! Can’t say I like them but they have been well installed so will have to stay. I’m told the car originated in The Netherlands and it certainly has an European VIN number (with the extra 9 in the number). I purchased it in Lithuania.

Yes I’ll ask my Landy friends about oil, one I know uses straight 30 in everything (he has a collection of Land Rovers and WW2 vehicles)

Why you want mineral oil so badly? Just use synthetic, change the oil & filter couple times sooner than normal if you afraid it would clean engine too well.

Because I don’t believe synthetic is the right oil to put in an old engine. The handbook has a brad spread of grades so trying to work out the best to use, I think for UK climate 10W 40 is the best spread. I have now found a few options. I have now also found EP90 in 20litre containers. So think I’m sorted.
