What year? Which starter coming out? Which going in?
30 minutes should be plenty of time, maybe more if going from an old starter to a new gear reduction starter because you need to lengthen a wire for that...

Its two bolts (or a bolt, and a nut on the top stud) plus an electrical connection. Half an hour should let you wash up and change clothes and be off to work.

It's only the top bolt thst will give you trouble and kinda difficult to get a wrench to sit correctly, not a lot of wiggle room but doable. Don't forget how all your connections go on the starter. Maybe take a picture of all the wires you have going to it since you're doing this before in a rush before work.

You should even have time for coffee, too. Getting a socket/wrench on the top nut will be the worst of it. Everything else is in your face.

Before I install a "new Starter"... I noticed that this wire is not connected. The PO has left odd wires, some connected/some not.
Are these two wires suppose to be connected? I circled them in Yellow. Thanks

Could that be your cold start bypass?

I have one on my 79 that applies a full 12v to the coil during starting, through an internal oem starter relay, bypassing an ignition resistor.

Check to see if the other end of that wire goes to your coil + terminal.

Will do first thing in the morning. Thanks for the insight. If it is a "cold start bypass" on my '74 is it ok if its not connected?

I'm not familiar with the 74 points model, but if it's only a cold start bypass, like on the 79 electronic ignition 2F, then it should start and run without it, but might have a weaker spark while cranking, especially in cold weather.

Maybe someone with a points model might chime in.
