2f motor. Truck in garage in trickle charger most of the time as it’s not my daily. Anyways, came out to a new fairly significant leak that appears to be mostly motor oil but maybe some water or coolant possibly as well. It is coming off the oil pan toward front of vehicle. I can see a drop forming within several seconds of wiping it …No obvious hose leaks. Any thoughts ?

Have you checked the oil to see if there’s coolant in it? Or gas in it (failed fuel pump).

Possibly water pump gasket?

I just changed the oil and was water free from what I can tell. Doesn’t smell like gas. definitely fresh motor oil that I just out in there last weekend

There is a lot going on in the front of the engine. You can always try tightening up the timing cover/oil pan. Just make sure about torque as those are super light in/lbs.

if it is coolant it will be wet above the oil pan/timing cover too as most of the coolant leak areas are above this area.

I put a bucket under leak and it’s pure coolant. I guess it looked like clean/new oil after it dried up some on the floor. Welp, the leak is not obvious …a few years ago I had a freeze plug issue that caused a huge leak. Maybe that’s it again. More investigation needed

There is a "hose from hell" under the water pump - like a 2" hose - hard to see from the top but it is there. If you are getting coolant and not from the big hoses, see if you can see the hose clamps on that little hose and tighten it down. You may have to pull the fan off or remove the alternator to get to it. Note that replacing that hose pretty much means you have to pull the water pump.

Ok dang…I’m not familiar with this hose but it sounds like a good candidate. Thanks for the picture too! Very helpful!

This was the culprit. “Hose from hell” is no joke. I was able to get to it with a socket on a swivel/extension…easy fix until that thing needs to be replaced !

Glad it worked out! Hence my comment on water pump replacement - I did it once without removing the water pump and do not recommend it...

So…I spoke too soon. The leak is still there. Seems to be coming from at or below water pump. Any other ideas?

It could be the seal between the water pump and the block. I would look carefully (with a mirror) and see if coolant is coming out of the weep hole in the pump or if the pump impeller (ie fan) feels wobbly. If so, you need another one. If the pump comes off, I would definitely replace the hoses, thermostat, and related gaskets. You could see if the bolts on the water pump housing are loose but I doubt tightening them especially if the gasket is contaminated will make a difference.

If you have never drained a Landcruiser cooling system before - definitely search on burping. Once the replacement job is done, I like to put the vehicle up on ramps and use a burping funnel to ensure there is no air in the system. A funnel like this: https://www.amazon.com/OEMTOOLS-870...ocphy=1014221&hvtargid=pla-2281435179098&th=1

You will have to get the system hot and burp it for 20-30 min. Afterwards your temp may read higher for a little while until the last of the air is out of the system.

Thanks…i didn’t even think about using a mirror! I was trying to get my camera in there with no luck. Fun…another project on my old truck :)

How much of a pain is this job?
