I’m trying to get my 97 LC back running again that my Dad gave me. It cut off on me a couple months ago. Finally got the courage to start working on it. I switched out the fuel pump two days ago with no luck it wouldn’t turn. Now I’m going to switch out the spark plugs. Next is the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Any advice please share, this is my first time doing this. So I’ve been watching YT videos to diagnosis they problems.

My advice would be hold off on replacing parts until you diagnose your issue. Do not follow general youtube videos, unless they are specific to the FZJ80. Buy an OBD2 reader and describe your issue here in detail. It won't turn over? Start with your battery,

Cool cruiser!

Time to diagnose vs throwing random parts at it. Youtube is a mess unless you know how to sort through the BS and find useful information.

When you say it cut off a few months ago does that mean it was running fine and just stopped?

Understood. I will do that. Yes tho I was watching videos specific to the FZJ80. But I will take your advice, I’m just being impatient so I figure just start replacing and everything you can. 🤣

Thank you. Yes I was driving it regularly and one day and when I pressed the gas it didn’t rev or move. It shut off I was able to restart it and it did the same thing again. When I tried to cut it back on now it just makes the initial sound but doesn’t turn over.

Download the set of FREE manuals that can be found on this web site.
Go to the Diagnostics section (DI) and follow the bouncing ball.

OH! And Welcome To MUD!!:flipoff2::flipoff2:
Looking forward to helping you spend your money.:p

Congrats on the cruiser! Get familier with that manual...everyone refers to it as the FSM and its invaluable. You may even want to splurge on a paper copy from ebay some day so you can get it greasy and dog eared.

Also look for folks in your local area "clubhouse" and post up an intro. You may even find some folks who would be willing to come have a look at it and help you diagnose the issue.

to help us help you, a little terminology clarification..."turning over" or cranking is how you'd describe the starter, well, turning over the engine but it doesn't start. it sounds like you have a crank no start issue as opposed to a no crank no start issue, but correct me if I'm wrong.
generally speaking, crank no starts a fit into one of 3 categories (in order of likelihood):
1: electrical/spark
2:fuel (don't forget fuel also relies on electrical systems)
3: compression.

The fact that you were able to briefly restart it when the issue initially came up and then not again after that would have me looking at fuel pressure as well. I know you replaced your pump but it would be wise to check that the pump is receiving power before you get too much farther loading the parts cannon.

Skip the youtube guys and just dig DEEP on this forum. Every possible issue on these trucks have been discussed and resolved over the last two decades.

If you are having a ''cranks but no start'' issue then I would read up on ''fzj80 fusible link'' on here. If you are going to toss money at it then that part is worth a shot. This is the best case scenario as they are cheap and easy to replace.

If its a crank but no start issue...type that into the search function here and put on a pot of coffee.

Post up as much info on your symptoms here and the hardcore guys will help you out.

Also, if you haven't seen the FAQ thread in this forum it's full many helpful things.
80 Series FAQ for general info modifications and repair

At the very least get familiar with the acronyms and jargon and terminology so that you can communicate in the common language here., @Tanner H is correct that there is a wealth of information here, but finding it can be challenging. Given that when you start you don't know what you don't know, its helpful to have a little background knowledge and the FAQ, combined with the owner's manual and the FSM and you have a lot of useful information to look through. No doubt that lots of it will be confusing at first, this thread you started might be a great place to ask some rookie qiuestions, without getting the old "Did you Search?" banter.

End of the day everyone here like to cheer on folks getting their problems sorted, so do post up more info if you get stuck! :)

No crank or no run?

Get some starter fluid. Use sparingly. If it starts up after a spray. It’s fuel related. If not it’s ignition related. Even super low compression will pop and fart with start spray.. use only to diagnose don’t get to happy and burn it up.
