I'm getting closer to finishing my garage - detached 2 car - and I'm planning to sheet the interior with either drywall or osb. Price is the same for either. I'm leaning toward OSB.

I'll paint whatever I put up white.

Anyone have OSB on the walls and wish they had put up drywall or have a good argument against OSB rather than drywall?

Drywall...

OSB looks like s*** painted. Plus moisture affects it more than drywall.

Use GIS plywood.

You can put a screw anywhere. I'd still go with drywall on the ceiling, but I can do my own taping.

Check your building code, IIRC you have to use sheet rock in garages. Double layer on walls that attach to other structures.

It's a fire thing.

I used to work for a big industrial painting company and between jobs I'd work a few days here and there on drywall crews so I'm pretty comfortable taping drywall. I don't like doing it, but I would If I had to.

I'm mostly inclined to do OSB because it adds sheer value to the building and I can stick stuff anywhere and I can pull off the panels to add or move wiring etc.

G1S plywood is probably too expensive for what it's going to be used for.

I'm not sure I want to go with an AB or AC plywood due to the cost.

It's detached and about 12 feet from my house corner so I don't need firewall other than the wall that is toward the property line. On that wall I'll have 5/8 rock inside and outside to meet the 1hr firewall requirement. Sounds like a great idea to put sheet rock on the outside! Anyway that is a must do. The rest is up to me.

Hi, Id use Dura- Rock ; water proof, fire proof. Mike

I *hate* OSB. HATE IT. Looks like crap, falls apart, etc.

Personally, I would do plywood for the bottom part, or maybe around the bench in the front, then sheetrock the rest.

Many commercial building use exterior drywall. It's called dura-clad or something like that and is usually yellow.

1/2" OSB doesn't hold a screw as well as plywood.

I'm surprised by so much opposition to OSB. I would have expected it to be a top choice. Many commercial shops in this area are OSB. My dad's is OSB for the first 8 feet then 8 feet of metal above - 16 foot walls.

Maybe drywall is a preferred option. I don't intend to live here more than 2-3 more years, so I care more about what will sell than what is functional.

I used OSB in my garden shed, it works well as long as you don't hang to much weight without finding a stud.

One place I worked had OSB walls in one of the conference rooms. It looks nice with a colored stain and a coat of poly. If you leave it raw it looks like crap in a hurry. Trim washers on the screws also help dress it up and hold better than just a screw.

Hey, do your own thing...but here's my 2 cents.

I put OSB on the walls of my garage which, like yours is detached. I don't mind the raw look, but I have seen OSB walls stained and sealed and they don't look bad to me. (Painting would look crappy.) After I added work benches shelves etc. , it looks fine. OSB holds a screw or nail better than drywall and I hung all my wrenches and hand tools with no problems, and when I need to move something the nail hole left behind is not noticeable. I put up shelves and some cabinets and just hung them on the studs. I also screwed some long boards horizontally to hang heavier items from. Drywall gets damaged easier and messed up by junk leaning on it or car doors hitting it etc.

Is it insulated? moisture barrier? drywall is best. I throw OSB onto the bonfire, won't use the stuff.
I cut 12" lengths of 3/4" plywood for baseboard around my whole shop, protects the drywall from floor jacks, jack stands and and errant stuff. Then i cut another 12" lengths about 6 feet up around the wall for hanging stuff from.

I'd go drywall, looks good painted, and will lighten up the room instead of stained osb.

What about peg-board? They make a lot of handy insterts for it these days.

I have osb. I have painted one wall .Will paint the rest someday. Best choice by far for a shop in my opinion.

I'd come up 4' with corrugated metal, put a trim board and then run gyp board above.

Whoever made the comment about using sheathing such as sob because it would add shear value, gyp board adds shear value as well. Not quite as much as sheathing, but still has some.
