Welllll......I did it.......

bj74.jpg

Just put my money down yesterday. After a little more research and talking to the owner...this is not just a lifted LC.

First, its owned by a 4wd shop and was built as their mod demo car. Sort of...."with a little money this could be yours" car.

To start off, its a 1989 BJ74. Then he junked the 13b that was in it and put in a 1HZ. Then added a turbo. He then added an electronic boost controller and EGT gauge.
He swapped the drivers seat for a custom recaro, added 3 24-12 converters, pulled out the Toyota GPS, added a CD changer (which will probably be junked).
He also put in the matching tranny for the 1HZ as well as new axles front and rear. It now has E-lockers in the rear and cable in the front (wish it was all cable for peace of mind and continuity). He threw out the electro hubs and installed free hubs.
The he swapped out the springs for a larger set with an extra leaf and anti-reversal shackles. He also installed pro-comp shocks while he was at it.
He pulled off the front and rear bumpers and installed these custom ones and raised the front one a bit to get more approach angle. The winch is a Warn 9000lbs winch 24v.
He then repainted it puke yellow and white...which for some reason...I like. Reminds me of Southern California Edison trucks...or any gov/utility truck where visibility is necessary.
Obviously he added a snorkel here, I believe its a safari or something.
It also has 4 wheel disc brakes.

My plans...

Install my custom PC/GPS from my Pajero. Its a 1 din micro PC hooked up to a GPS mouse and 8inch touch screen. I then have custom GPS software installed that lets me put maps of anywhere in the world on it. Very handed when navigating semi-charted areas of Japan. I also run MP3s and movies through this nifty machine.

Design/install an air-water intercooler.

The big one. I want to modify/make a soft top for the car that has an integrated tent feature. I have it sketched out and it should be very cool while keeping factory lines. No serious details now as I may want to market it.

I will pull out the rear carpet and use as a template for rubber mat. Then reinstall carpet on top of mat. This is so I can haul fire wood, kerosene, veg oil, muddy dog...anything without ruining the factory carpet.

I will probably turn down the fuel a bit, as I don't need optimal power. I need minimal smoke, complete burns, and economy.

This should be a pretty cool truck....as long as I don't roll this one.

Looks good ,well except for the bonnet:D It should have plenty of power.

You could probably add some bar work to the front bumper to protect the winch and radiator

...

Not too worried about the grill and winch...not too man 'roos to hit over here in Japan. Something tall enough to do damage to that area will either carry a jail sentence with it...or a tree. In either case, probably won't hit either. I will be adding some off shoots to protect those fenders. I can't go nutty with exos and things because in Japan, anything that changes the registered characteristics of the car requires extensive paperwork and could possibly change the registration class. As it is, I have to change out springs to have it registered yearly, otherwise the state insurannce doubles due to the height increase. I do have a minor exo/rack/shade cover system designed to work in conjunction with the tent top. HOPEFULLy...I can get the thing built. I would like to try to use the original toyota soft top as a base for the tent and build my own internal frame for it.

Leave the FRP on and buy one of those tents that you can reverse a big 4wd into the opening.
The tent is held tight around the vehicle with elastic and cords.
When you want to go away you can leave the tent behind;)

Actually your picture and the desire for a more rugged/military look is whats driving my urge to design this soft top.

Mine is a 75 series and is meant to be like that;) It has an 8ft tray with my bed in there.
But I left the roof on my 73 series:D

I don't think the flatbed version was ever available here in JP.

Only for the govt. They use them as fire engines mainly. Im kind of surprised they dont use them more in their military and civil defence.

HOLA! Well folks, I did it! Back into the land of the cruiser!
Just drove my 1998 BJ74 back to the island this evening!
She needs a bit of work to get things in shape, but all in all I’m rather exited to be getting back into the swing of things!
