Hello everyone,

I wanted to introduce myself to all of you here, and say that I am very excited to have finally found the "right" 40 for me.
I have been mostly in the 80 series tech section for the last few years posting about my 97 while learning and (I hope) helping a bit too. My 80 is very much modified and continues to evolve, and I love it and the fun times with it. My problem has been that I also have a love for vehicles that are totally original, not perfect by any means but sort of like a time capsule - this is something that my 80 is definitely not!
I have seen many great 40's come and go in the Mud classifieds, several really good ones that fit the bill for me really well. The problem I had is familiar to us all, I couldn't match the moment I had the money saved with the time each particular truck came for sale. As soon as I had a "40 nest egg " saved, a new first world disaster would strike and vaporize my fund, poor baby.
Enter Troy, aka @olive on Mud, and our meeting of the Lake Michigan Land Cruisers group for the Land Cruiser Relay kick off. Troy contacted other Land Cruiser owners to join him at Dark Horse Brewery in Marshall MI for the kick off of the north leg of the trek . It was a great idea and a great time - good people, good beer, good Cruisers. When I pulled into the lot that day, the very first thing I saw was his Olive Brown 78 FJ40 sitting there. Just like the prettiest girl in the room, there's no chance you don't notice, and you have a hard time looking away. Within a couple of minutes of mee ting some of the guys, I had to ask if he would ever want to sell it, and that I'd be very interested. The beauty checked all the boxes for me - 78, original interior, awesome color with original paint, all original parts included plus manuals, original drivetrain (actually has a new 2f but he gave me the original in great rebuildable condition), and basically ready to drive pretty much anywhere. It did have a bit more rust than I had pictured for my perfect 40, but it looked manageable. Well, Troy never forgot our conversation and we discussed some possibilities over the next couple of months. When he made the decision to sell it, Troy called me and we quickly agreed on a price that, based on my Mud research over the last couple of years was spot on.
I have owned a ton of vehicles in my life, always wanting something different, until I found the Toyota Land Cruiser in its many series and variants. They are, as I tell everyone that I know who doesn't understand "the greatest vehicle ever made by humans".
I hope to share some upcoming work updates with you all as I go along and I have some different thoughts on how I'm going to protect and preserve my new gem. The journey will be fun and interesting I'm sure.
This community is like no other I have ever seen, and I consider it a privilege to be able to learn and be allowed to share experiences here! Thanks to all of you that have put so much information before us to benefit from.

Cheers,

Patrick

A couple of more pictures, the title hand off, ready to haul home to Michigan from NW Ohio, my two favorite cruisers together.

Very nice. Congrats on a great find.

Best color, second best year :hillbilly:

Thank you all, it is definitely a great thing in my life that I suppose only a Cruiserhead can understand. I kind of stayed away from posting up that her official name is "Olive" until I talked about it with Troy, but he said it has been her name for many years so it will be carried on. He also gave me her great background story which I will share soon too.
It is amazing how much more value something can have when it is connected with other people and history. It is for me for sure, and I bet many can relate to that. If this had just been an ebay purchase or the like, the stong feeling I already have probably wouldn't exist, but the great situation of meeting new friends and connecting with Mud members along with the purchase make it extra awesome for me. I feel like I get to carry on with a living piece of history.

We all like a good story - bring it on!

I have a bad habit of throwing out the first thing that comes to mind. Part of my story really should include the admission that I read @Sea Knight 's thread about the rustbucket. I learned a lot in a hurry because I, like pretty much all that read it, was totally blown away with the story and the writing. I knew I was going to be getting Olive, and of course I had her half done in my head. Anyway, I went searching for rust repair threads and stumbled on that one. I was sure to read it through before going to get her, for full effect and respect for what I was getting. It also occurred to me that it was high time to relax in my writing and try to convey this great Land Cruiser life ride I'm on to all my co- addicted brethren.

Very nice ... it's very complete ... and more complete then most that are called restorations :)

Welcome to mud!
Thanks! I really hate rust, but this time the other details on the truck trumped the rust issues. I used to do frame off restos in a shop some 25 years ago after I left a physical science curriculum in college cause all I could think about was cars. Fixing rust really was a bummer, but I know how to do that stuff at least, even if the rustyness is my abilities. I own a powder coating business now, so I still get to work on peoples cool projects.

Nice color. And your rear sill looks just like mine...non-existent!
Thanks, and agreed on the sill, or lack of. I love the look of my 40 but the one mod I really can't ignore that I want (for look and for the usable benefit) would be a lift and skinny 33" tires. Yours looks just about perfect. What lift is that? Thanks.

I have a '78 as well with smallish lift on 33's and love the way it rides! Nice rig and welcome:beer:

Thanks! The only “lift” I’ve done is 1.5” Performance Shackles (part# 288-80) from SOR and a Rancho add-a-leaf (Part# RS60612) in the rear to help it all sit level. The add-a-leaf was a cheap and effective fix for the normally sagging rear of an older 40. I’m sure I’ll be chided by someone for not replacing the whole spring pack or something like that. I don’t do any serious wheeling, so it fits my needs. I also run 31x10.5 Mud Terrains on stock wheels. I love the look of the whole setup and it rides smooth on the road at 50mph or so.

Congratulations on finally scratching that itch. I am glad that it's coming to Michigan, not many 40's around these parts. I look forward to getting an opportunity to see it.

Thanks, I am very happy these days. I agree on the lack of representation of 40 series, and really all cruisers in our state. Seems wierd because I think there is a lot to offer in the off road world, it just isn't well known or publicised. It has to be the "American car" stigma that comes from the auto industry. My extended family is originally from Pontiac and, while I love them, they hate foreign brands and give me grief but really can't explain why. My dad was a union commercial electrician with the IBEW for many years on the east side of the state, doing some serious cool mega installs in auto plants for 22 years, but moved us to the west side when I was still in grade school to start his own business. It made me who I am and taught me to keep my mind open for other options. I think I seriously pissed him off when I promptly took the $500 my parents gave me for high school graduation and bought a 74 Saab 99. Not exactly the car he would have picked, but I gotra admit, he was right there when it was wrenching time. People are funny, they either accept that there are many things they don't know and decide to listen, or they pick a train of thought and ride that baby to the grave. Me, I consider it a privilege to get to soak up free knowledge from whoever offers it up. Sometimes it gets to happen over a fine IPA, it's almost like cheating!
