Need some 2004 owners to chime in

I found a 2004 which has been very well maintained with just over 60k on the clock. They are asking 26.5k. The big item which has me concerned is the 60 pin issue with the MFD.

How many of you have experienced a failure or other issue?

not familiar with it. Love my 2004, 5 speed, Nav, Blue tooth. 60K is very low miles, seems like a reasonable deal for the mileage

Has the mfd already been replaced? You should be able to see history from toyota.com/owners or check with a dealership.

It's been discussed in other threads but off the cuff you have a few options:
- pay to fix for a few hundred, couple of places that do the service
- fix yourself if you've got soldering skills
- get reman'd one for ~1k iirc but they're not always available
- get used/salvage one sometimes with warranty for ~900 (e. gus mancy sells em, you could check with cruiserparts.net etc)
- get new one for a few grand
- source one off ebay or other random sources

My original MFD failed. I had bought the Toyota Platinum Extended Warranty when I bought the '04 used and that paid for the replacement.

I've had my '04 for a while now and haven't experienced that problem. Don't let that scare you away from buying it.

I've had an 04 for about 4 years now, 106 on the clock, bought it with 51...no issues at all. $26K sounds like a decent deal...only thing I've been debating is when to spend $170+ on the NAV update...roads change a lot here in central Texas.

No issues with my '04 at all, with 87,000 miles.

It went on my 04 with 64k. I had a reman'd one put in from Denso for $960 installed at the dealership.

I'd bet you can get that LC sale price down a little lower. Especially with gas prices going up, they'll be eager to make a deal. Bring up the MFD issue on the 04's as a reason to haggle. If they google it they'll see the issues.

No problems at all with our 04,it's got around 112k.I have seen prices lower but higher miles.I paid around 24k two yrs.ago with 89k miles and the T.belt/water pump service was done at 75k.Looks like a good deal post up some pics.Go for it.Very nice trucks.Well built and the ride is super nice.

We've had our '04 for about 4.5 years, and it's been almost trouble-free (bad air bag control module). It's got ~210k miles and is still a pleasure to drive.

60k miles should be almost new! I don't expect you'd be disappointed.

I agree with all the above. Also I just bought a 2004 in January in great shape with 75k on it for $22,500 from a friend.

I haven't had it long but no problems and I know the previous owner had no problem either.

I don't know about the MFD, but I did just finish looking for 100s. I ended up with an '03 w/115k for $18.5. I saw a lot of 90k or so ones in the low $20s though. Murf did tell me that there are places out there that repair the MFDs just fine.

I started off looking for lower mileage ones, but the prices for those seemed relatively high. But I have a lot of confidence in the brand and will drive it until it's worth nothing, whereas if a lot of non-LC folks will dismiss a vehicle offhand with higher mileage I think.

Personally, I came to the conclusion that pound for pound, higher mileage LCs were a better deal overall. But that's highly subjective.

I'm going to grab mine this weekend, and am really looking fwd to the move up. Good luck finding yours!

My 2004 has 125k on the original MFD. no issues

Also just swapped out the rear AHC globes. Ride was ok before but now it's smooth as silk.

We bought our 04 with 65K last fall. Zero issues since. We went for lower miles and paid a premium..
The last three we had all went well over 200K, with very few issues.
I will tell you, there is a big difference between low mileage and high mileage 100s. Our 99 had 230K, and was still running very well. We made a decision to start using the LC to pull our travel trailer instead of my Tacoma. That's when I decided to look for a newer one.
Driving the 04 with 65K was a huge difference over the 99 with 230K.. The 04 is like new with that few miles on it.
Good luck with your purchase. You'll love it. Except when you fill it up.. (w gas) ha!

agree! Higher Mileage (or anything above 90K) means you prolly wont have to spend the $$$ for the 90K service, so better value, if you are looking at one with 80K miles vs 90K plus..go with the 90K +
