i just bought a 70 fj40. it has a spring over that i would like to drop back to stock. what are the parts that i need to do that. will it be a lot of work? does any one have the parts i need to reverse the spring over? please advise a newbee to the cruiser family but excited!!! always wanted a cruiser they kick ass!!!

from what ive heard, spring overs are supposed to be one of the best rides on a 40. why do you want to change it? guessing if you changed it youd probably need new springs at least for it to ride nice.

Depends on how well the PO did the SOA conversion - to do it right you have to cut-n-turn the axle housing. If this has been done you would be better off swapping axles with someone wanting to go SOA...instead of cut-n-turn over again, re-fabbing the perches and shock mounts (this would cost as much as lifting did).

Then you have to take a look at what was done to the steering - did they do a hi-steer? Pics would help -

soa convertion

i will take pics and try to put them on the page. i just don't want it that high. it sits on 33" and it looks like it has chicken legs. i want it to look stout!! my choices would be to buy bigger tires. 35"/ 36" or drop it back down and leave the 33's. plus my kids are small and it's hard for them. and the last nail is that it doesn't fit in my garage and i really heat to leave it outside although i live in a better neighborhood. the fj40 seems to be done right. it also has a chevy 350 conversion " which i like". it's very clean inside and out. from what i remember looking at i think the purchase points were moved because i think i saw the bottom of the axle being round.

looking for parts 70 fj40

i'm looking for hard doors for a 70 fj40. also, looking for fenders for the same.

Where are you and your cruiser?

It sounds like you'd be better off to just swap your current axles intact with someone else. Or even buy a set of stock housings and swap all your parts onto them. Then sell the modified housings to someone that wants them.

I'd consider a trade, if you are near san diego, ca. I have a hard top and doors but Im not sure if I want to get rid of them or not

i'm located in florida. is it that much work? what does it really intail?

i don't need a top just hard doors.

I'll trade for sure

Post some pics, lets see how the truck is done

My front axle has been rebuilt (by me) and I have new brakes all around.

FIRST DIBS! :D -Assuming BLK doesn't want it. (FLA isn't close to San Diego lol)

Contact me via PM if you are interested.

It would probably be bolt on, a half day.

i still have not gotten any info. on what it takes to flip it back down. it there more to it then just relocating the purchase points. hell, i can cut and weld1 if that's it. if not PLEASE HELP IN GIVING ME SOME DETAIL.

if the po did it right the knuckles have been rotated and would need to be rotated back to stock. it ain't worth it , are the current springs flat ? how long are the shacles ? if you do want to go back to sua then swap housings with some one and steering with same person.
what the hell are you thinking. soa kicks ass. sua is great to but if you intend to thrash and whell it is better soa. especially when it is mud.

We already said we can't give you any specific info until you give us some specific info.

Pictures are best, since theres not much room for misunderstanding in terms etc.

There are many variables and different ways to do an SOA and all of them would require different amounts of work.

soa vs. sua

i will take pics. i've learned a few things today. i saw a picture of the cruisers steering arm. it's not what i have . i'm almost sure i have a chevy steering box because i also have power steering. i will have more info tomorrow i'm at work until tomorrow morning. to answer the question on way i want to bring it down. it's because i want this as my daily drive. it has a chevy 350 and the 33's look like chicken legs so i would have to go bigger. i drive 45 mins eachway to work. that is a lot of tire and gas usage. plus, i like the lower more stout look.

Where in Fla? Usually they leave the bottom spring perches in place when doing SOA, so you may have very little to do other than moving the springs, pics would really help though. If it was well done, I'm in line for the axles. You a FF?

thx to ed who has been great help for telling me about this site. you guys rock!! i went home and started to look around the cruiser to see what's in it. the cruiser has the purchase points rewelded on the top. i also found that is has a shackle reversal and disc brakes!!! the more i learn the more i find. it also has a built in air compressor system. i think i'm going to keep it with the soa and buy bigger tires. OH can't forget!! thx Ed i was able to put it in the garage by taking some air out of the tires. i'm sure that won't work if i put 35s or 36s. !!

should still work on 35's, just let more air out of the tires.

For what its worth. I had a neighbor who had one of those tall vans. He took the garage door down opened up the top another 6 inches and put the door back, but higher. A lot of garages have 1 - 2 feet between the rails and the ceiling. If you have room, you could raise it.
