hello guys, i have a 94 landcruiser i have been waiting 1 month and got 2 wrong snap rings. im looking for the little snap ring that holds the viscous coupler on in the transfer case in the rear extension housing. the part number for the snap ring i picked up today is
90520-39022 its a little too big and is about half the thickness of the original, too bad i had to wait two weeks only to find out its the wrong one. i would reuse my old one but its not holding its size when trying to install it. if somebody has the EPC or the part number please help me out. the little snap ring is whats holding me back from fixing this thing. thanks guys

I cant help you with the part but you should call CDan at american toyota. He will take good care of you. Im not in my office so I dont have his number handy. Search here for cdan.

just got a call back from Dan, both part numbers listed for the viscous coupler snap ring are incorrect. so i lost hope when Dan told me he has no idea what part number is correct. im going to try looking for a alternative snap ring.

Any salvage yards near you?

i never find any 80's in the junkyard. however there is a 97 4x4 4runner with a diff locker. maybe i can take apart that transfer case to find the part?

Which snap ring is it in the diagram below?

If it's 36231F, then they come in many sizes. Your old one should have a letter on it, see if it does, and if you just want that size, match it up below.

Yes that's the correct diagram and suppose to be the correct snap ring according to the EPC. As u can see there is sizes A-J I ordered a size A 2mm. Then Dan recommended the 1st one on that list which does not use different markings and is just 1 size. But both of them turned out being too large for the rear shaft. There must be some mix up in the part numbers. I'm going to try going to a transmission shop tomorrow to see if they have any Toyota snap rings.

When I look closely on my old snap ring it has a faint A or H marking. It pretty much looks like 11 and is 2mm thick.

The easy way; redeem the VC for $.08 per LB at the scrap yard and be done with it.:hillbilly: IMHO, they are pretty much worthless.

Can it just be removed like that? I thought if I remove it will turn the transfer case in to a part-time transfer case. Well atleast I know the VC works, I can spin 1 wheel by hand when 3 wheels are on the ground.

It works as a very weak limited slip, mostly a complicated noise/rattle reducing device. When removed, the only difference that I note is slightly more drive train clunk. It was only installed in the '93-'97 '80 series, the '91-92 '80 and the '100 series didn't have them, in basically the same transfer.

What is the inside diameter of the original ring?

Does the inside diameter of the 90520-39022 measure 39mm?

hey Dan, just took some measurements, the 39022 is 39mm and my original is 34mm. but i just took care of my issue, i went to a local transmission repair shop and the guy found me a new snap ring which is only slightly larger but still fits in the groove on the shaft, the overall diameter is the same. thanks for everybody's time.

I say remove the v/c, all mine did was get really hot and shorten the fluid life, too weak to act as a limited slip (at least with 35's ) and just adds weight and drag to the drive train. I have had mine out for about four months now and runs just like it did when it was in there.

Great that local transmission shop had a new and usable snap ring!!

By any chance did they give you a part number or reference what vehicle application it was originally used for?? That information would be helpful to others in the future that might have the same issue and be referencing this thread when searching for a solution!???
