moving to NC (Jacksonville area) and I'm nervous. I have only 4x4 in the desert southwest so I'm used to rocky, mountainous, desert terrain. No idea what to expect moving to the east coast. Any advice?

We have rocky (Uwharrie) mountainous (duh) and PLENTY of sand (see the STR thread)
You also can find plenty of mud and find out why we hate mud.
Have No Fear, we wheel.
Jump right aboard mate.

welcome!!!

Nice to see another SW'er out here. I grew up in the LA area but spent lots of my youth exploring the deserts of the SW as well as the mountains (if you are a lover of the mountains you will miss them most of all out here, especially in jacksonville) I explored much of AZ and my dad is building his retirement home in Sedona.

That said NC is a great state

There is beach driving not too far from you. OBX, FT fisher, Carolina beach come to mind. But it is beach driving, not too technical but also not very busy on the beaches unless its a holiday weekend so it is nice to use them to get off the main road, away from people and down near the water.

To really get away (what you would be used to back home in the desert) then Portsmouth island would be your best bet. You have to take a ferry to get there and it is just sand and marsh driving all over the island.

There are two designated OHV areas in the state. Uwharrie (our club goes here 3-4 times a year) and Brown MT. Brown MT for 4wd vehicles is basically a long dirt road loop with a few areas that could be "challenging for a stock height rig" but mostly just a dirt road. Great views and great camping but it is a atv/dirt bike part mostly.

Uwharrie has about 16 miles or so of trails for us to explore and our club also sponsors a trail there and does work days for it.

There are a few other places to get off the beaten track, not technical at all though and can easily be done in a stock LC.

Hurricane Creek is another good "expo" style trip as well as black balsam.

There are other places to wheel in other states scattered out there.

The hills of NC are nice to go to in the summer months to escape the heat. They are nice to drive through.

You won't find anywhere near as many places to wheel out here but you are in luck because the greatest LC club in the land resides in NC and you have found them. We also do at least 1 trip a month with regional meetings. There are a few members out by the coast also. Adam @custyota is one of them.

Check out our club calendar for upcoming events.

As far as living in NC on the east coast. It will be a culture shock at first, just like moving anywhere far from home. The first year my wife and I were here we didn't know anyone outside of 2 family members so we spent our free time just driving to different parts of the state and walking around. Its a great way to see the state and get out. Getting out and exploring will help with the culture shock you will get going from AZ to NC

PS if you like craft beer NC is one of the up and coming states, its starting to creep towards my top 5. There are some top notch breweries here.

I live in Morehead City. I believe I'm the closest club member to you. There is no "wheeling" in the Jacksonville area besides mudbogs lol Welcome to the South!

You need to go to Harlan to hear the banjos :)

Welcome.
I'm down in Wilmington.
As Al said, out this way the only legal off-roading is the beaches. This far East where its all flat, anything else seems to be mud pits.
It has been stated, but bears repeating, this is a great club.

Just remember when you're out wheeling, if you hear banjos...... ;)

Welcome!

As a friend of mine once said .... the only state where even the Episcopals have snakes.

Taking up serpents is the norm, as is drinking the strychnine. We all do it down here. Anybody who says otherwise is just ashamed to admit it.

Thanks for all the advice! Sounds like I'll have much to get used to. Although I have a stock LC (lexus), I do take it on some fun challenging stuff out here. It's definitely earned it's AZ & West Texas "pinstripes" & has gotten it's hitch scraped a couple of times. Not a gung ho rock climber though. I will definitely miss the beautiful desert mountains and being able to see as far my eye can see. I felt very claustrophobic when I lived in TN as there were trees always blocking my ability to see the earth meet the sky. I'll readjust, no biggie.
Um . . . and . . . since you guys threw it out there, hearing banjos scares me the most about moving out there as I'm not white . It's ok though, I'm prepared for the common comments & questions I got when I briefly lived in TN. No, this isn't my first time in the United States (born n bred here). No, i'm not here to pick crops. Yes, I speak English (not y'allbonics, which is why I can't understand a :censor: word you're saying). No, my dad isn't in the cartel & no, my brothers don't drive low riders but Yes, I can cook some down home Mexican food. :D
I'll be out there in July, Looking forward to the beach & meeting some of "y'all".

if you can cook good mexican food then you will be popular out here. Everyone I've met that are transplants from the west coast always say that you cant really find good Mexican here. (in charlotte and Raleigh at least) I feast on Mexican when I go home (that and inn n out)

so that said you are welcome at my house anytime

but be truthful your cousins do work for the cartel right ...... ;)

"""but be truthful your cousins do work for the cartel right ...... ;)""

Snitches get stiches! or get chopped up in bits & shoved in a trash can.
I'll hook you up w/ some grub. I just can't make the Cali style 10 pound carne asada burritos!

Mmmm.... Burritos... The single biggest thing I miss about California (specifically breakfast burritos - it's criminal how underrated they are)... Anyhow, welcome! What takes you to Jacksonville? Having spent a bit of time there, I can only assume it's the Marine Corps. @custyota and I both served in the beloved Corps and I think there are a few other Jarheads in this club. Which, as everyone has already stated, is a super bunch of folks!

mmmm breakfast burritos!! chorizo, potato & egg is my fav on fresh homemade flour tortillas.

yes, married to a hillbilly jarhead from TN. supposed to be for three years & I'm hoping for not a day more as I don't want to end up liking it & getting "stuck" on the east coast. =) I don't do mud either, never have. Completely inexperienced in that terrain. I'll run to the hills (iron maiden anyone?) or sand. looking forward to it.
