If it is just black and has no stripe, then it is probably an aftermarket wire installed by a previous owner. These is no black only wire that goes through the firewall on stock cruisers (that I am aware of; maybe you have a year I am not aware of; you didn't say which year you have). The only stock black wire goes from the distributor to the coil on points type ignitions.

Get ambitious and look under the dash to follow the other end of the wire to find out where it connects to. Then you can figure out if it used to do something useful.

I have a similar issue with my 72. A club member (a Toyota mechanic) told me I was supposed to have dual temp senders. The wire (solid black with a factory bullet connection) ends right where the second sender would be located. I have a plug in the head currently and will be installing another sender.

Could it be the wire for the backup light switch from an old column shift?

Peel back the harness wrapping and try to find the stripe color. The only solid black wires toyota used were from the distributor to the coil and the huge wire between the battery + and the starter.

There are are 2 black wires in the 40 that have SCC,
One goes to the Turn fuse and one goes to the thermo sensor,
Check your wiring diagram

What's SCC and TP on a 72 Cruiser? The 71 Schematic is as Pin_head said, only two black wires, battery + (which is strange) and the dizzy to coil -.

If you have a 72,73 or 74 schematic in digital form I would love to have it. :D

SCC is spark control computer, part of emission system ,probably more common on 77 and up.
I have seen it on a 74 Candian Cruiser I still have some of the harness I can check the emission box to see the wires.
Never really did much to understand all of it, because I ran my 2F free of all that stuff, now I am putting a 3B with a 4 speed into it,so I don't care to learn any more about.
I still remember having Nightmares about 4x4 older Toy emissiom lines, and stuff.
TP is throutle positioner Diaphram I believe, I don't if if I pelled right.
I have this in my manual for 72,73 fj40.
There is also a speed senser on the back of the cluster , I have seen one on a 78 US 40.
The Hynes manual explains all this stuff very well.
I can scan (72,73) wiring diagram and post it tomorrow.

Ah... The US early 70's Cruisers had a 'Computer' too. They really didn't do much. ;)

I would appreciate a hi-res scan of the schematic. If it's huge, I will give you an FTP site to upload it to. If under 5 meg it can be sent to coolerman@globalsoftware-inc.com

Ok here is a diagram copied straight from my manual. I tried to be as exact as I can.

35- Speed sensor
36- Spark control computer
37- Thermo sensor
38- Vacum switching valve
39- Fuse (turn)

As you can see I made a mistake in my earlier post the other black wire goes to the turn fuse.
I will go back and edit it.
I had to use my old MG to be able to read the diagram clearly.
And I was very pissed at the tax man yesterday, if he is to read this he can go to hell, but I am very hapy to report the arival of the GF ride, an HJ60 with auto trans.
