Hey Mudders, wondering if anyone might know the origin of my odd OD unit. It's not a Fairey, and despite the similar barrel shape, it's not a Hone-o-Drive either. It has no markings except a tiny 4-digit number stamped on the bottom edge. It still works and is geared pretty high...65 mph in top gear is the lowest speed you can use it at to keep the engine from lugging too hard.

Little background on the truck: 4/72 build date, original PO purchased from Pendleton, Oregon Toyota dealership in '72. I bought it as the 3rd owner with original 1F and drivetrain, and the OD was installed by the original owner. PO (2d owner) knew nothing of the origin of the unit either.

I've heard a rumor that someone else in Oregon with an FJ55 had a similar mystery unit, and that it could potentially have been a dealer-installed unit. Curious to know more about it!

(Pic #1 is the OD, Pic #2 is the shifter in the cabin, #3 is the truck :grinpimp:).

What makes you certian that it is not a Bone a drive?

I had searched before, but pictures I found then didn't seem to match (including lack of brand label). Local LC shop wasn't sure it was a Hone-o-drive. I guess I'm not so convinced anymore...:hhmm:

It looks identical to the Bone a drives I have thrown out.
:meh:

Yeah, this thing howls like a banshee on the hiway. Plan on removing it when I pull the drivetrain for a 4-spd conversion this winter.

Anything I should know about or tricky about removing this from the t-case? I plan on using my 3-spd case with the 4-spd conversion.

I would not even screw around with removing it.

Run the transfer case on the rear of the 4spd.

Could you post a photo of the rear drive line? Emergency brake to the pinion.

std driveshaft, albeit shortened.

no kidding...looks like the spline is bottomed out.

Not mine, just something I saved for instances such as this!
