What are you doing with that 10 spline birf?

Ya, what the hell?

I just got a set of Antho-birfs for my new front axle, heard good reviews. Too Tall has a bunch he is selling on Blackflag.

Who's sm420 adapter are you using?

Looks like it is coming along good!

hhhmmm wow, i havnt check this thread for ages.....sorry abou that. there has been very little progress in way to long, i have been messing around with my winch a bit, trying to get my in cab controls to jive with the regular ones...that and i have had a few distractions such as the shelter i was working in collapsing on my truck because of the stupid amounts of snow we ended up getting while i was away over christmas and lifting my dads fj62 along with front axle re-build yadda yadda yadda....to answer the q's

flyinglow: i chucked the birfs into the fire to anneal them so i could machine them into my t-case shifters...i thought it would look pretty wicked, i also have a inner star from a birf that i plan on using for my trans shifter. and a valve lifter for the free spool knob on my winch seeing as mine is MIA

jakes: i think thats a spaceghost adapter plate that im using. i got it off a fellow mudder....lchamma if iirc

dslcruzr: you think i would shell out that kinda money for a remote?! as far as being cheap goes im right up there with ryan when it comes to building my truck!

winkle: your fenders look awesome...but not quite what im shooting for with my build. i wheel in the north west, on vancouver island and trails are tight...i plan on getting rid of my aprons and bring the fenders up to the hood level, throwing a brace across the engine bay and tying them into a front hoop to keep every thing VERY strong...this way if i rub against a tree or something then i wont be worried about tweaking the fenders..that and i plan on running 35's stock height which will mean i cant keep the stock fender height...also, i need to buy or make a tube bender so if i can stick with all the same tube thickness it means i only have to buy 1 die.

thanks for the reply's guys! i will have to get my shiat together and start cracken again...just picked up some seats for the truck...just RCI plastic racing buckets but hey, its better than nothing.

I don't want to burst your bubble and I think the birf shifters will be cool but..... there was a Toyota Trails a while back where Mark Whatley was talking about resting your hand on the shift or having a heavy knob on the end.... He said it will wear things out (synchros I believe) in the tranny. I don't know if it is as much of a problem on the t-case though. Get that junk goin!

hhhhmmm well that just plain sucks, i find im always resting my hand on the shifter when i drive also....the t-case i dont think will be a problem, no syncro's or anything to worry about...but that sucks about the trans...thanks for the heads up

From what I've been told resting your hand on the shifter keeps your shifter forks pressing on the shift collar in the transmission. It wears out the fork and doesn't do the collar any good either.

My BJ40 makes an unpleasant whining sound when I rest my hand on the shifter to remind me to keep my hand off unless I am shifting gears.

Ahh, brings a tear to me eye, to be the yardstick for cheapness...:grinpimp:

I actually have to go buy some parts today...terribly upsetting...

looks good...And I'm sure you were roasting some weenies or drinking a beer or two around the birfield fire, just so it wasn't too much of a waste...

hhhmmm wow, its been a long time since i updated this thread..mostly because i havnt gotten much done on my truck for a LONG time...but i finally got a workspace and made sure my truck was inside the shelter before the old man could get his in i have about 200' of DOM and ERW 1.75 tube in the shelter for a cage and sliders/tube fenders as well as a front hoop ...so i gotta kinda get my stuff going and get some things done before i head out again in august

where im at....the shelter got opened up yesterday and i pulled the truck in and started ripping out rear springs to put 60 series springs in so...heres some update pics...im hoping to work on this thing most days after work so i should be getting a bit done on a more regular basis

pictures!

pimpin shelter! 60 rears make a great addition to 40s I have a set with the flat overload on the bottom and they flex real nice and ride way better

keep up the good work oh and well have to go on a cruiserhead run when all our trucks are done!

well...i wouldnt exactly call it a shop....its a tent on steroids....but its way way better then the driveway in the rain/snow mid way through january doing a head gasket...

well...worked on the truck a bit today and yesterday, finished hacking up the 60 frame i brought home and i now have my hangers sorted out. looking like i will have the day off tomorrow so im going to cut off my old hangers and start figuring where i need to put the ones i pulled of the 60 and i might end up doing some frame repairs...

other thing iv been working on is my got trikes bender...had a machinist buddy of mine mill up the arms and a few of the pushings ect, welded up the main frame but im a bit short material so...just gotta go pick up a bit and i might be able to finish up the bender in the next few days...then i can bend tube for my truck!

things go along alot faster when i work a couple hours on it every day...will post some pics as i make better progress

oh and as far as doing a run once the trucks are done...im going to be trying to finish my truck or at least mobile again by mid august because ill have to head to edmonton for school. if its done though i would like to do a shake down run before i leave

some pics of the tube bender im working on so i can do up my own cage, sliders ect. worked on getting the spring hangers off today but the PO left me some surprises...and the frame is going to need alot more work that i had first anticipated...no pictures of the frame or the repairs tho (public forum...dont need to go looking for trouble)

From what I've been told resting your hand on the shifter keeps your shifter forks pressing on the shift collar in the transmission. It wears out the fork and doesn't do the collar any good either.

some transmissions are really affected by this , i have actually welded pieces of plate into a 5speed out of a f150 because the fork wore completely away .

it does more harm to some tranny's then others .

yea, i think what i might end up doing is i have some old course spline birfs...might cut the splined end off of that and use it as a shift knob....

so as an update..i finall pulled all my hangers off and my rear bumper, im starting to patch things where required, will get that all finished up this weekend, gunna get my brother in law (rabbit is his handle here i believe) to come help me out for a day. then i just have to worry about making some shackels and placing my hangers...nd then move on to the next thing...thinking the SM could go in next...

YIPEE found the shackels we took off the 60 when we did the lift so i dont have to worry about making them for the back end

well..my goal for today was to get the truck rolling...a bit ambitious i guess...i got the rear hangers welded on but didnt get to the fronts, am also going to have to box my frame in the rear. the PO has done some "interesting" frame repairs...like my frame rails are 1/2" difference in length ect...not pleased but, theyre on and i hope i dont have to pull them off any time soon.

some pics, not many but a few
my "way back" shackel hangers...couldnt really afford to buy the ruff stuff specialties ones so i modified the stock 60 ones

brother in law took the pic while i was busy....just welding the hangers on

looking good mines coming along niceley sure cant wait for an island cruiserhead run sometime maybee in the late summer

better watch out tho..too late in the summer and ill be headen out to edmonton for the winter...school, but i still got my stockish BJ42 to wheel...so i got it covered either way:flipoff2::hillbilly:

well...yesterday wasnt a whole lot of fun...thought i had it all finished and was just about to drop my axle onto the spring pins...one side on, then go to do the other and it wont fit...wtf, then i remembered that the stock hangers were outborded from the frame so...after much cursing and swearing i finally got down to pulling the axle out of the truck...

got the axle out to cut the perches off and figured since it was out i might as well swap diffs to one of my spares cause the pinion seal was leaking so away i went, spent the rest of the afternoon stripping the axle and digging out my spare diff. since i had the diff out anyways and i had been curious/wanting a locker...i dediced to do a lincoln locker or in this case....miller. yes i know its not the best and i dont really like doing it but i have lots of diffs and a spare set of spiders so ta hell with it, its a bush truck and will only be driven to and from the trail...that and i simply dont have the 300 for a locker...i think iv got about $120 into this mod...and thats what the bushings cost me, everything else i have aquired over the past few years or in the case of the front springs ill be using, traded for.

went to put the dodge spring perches on that everybody seems to use for their spring overs and first found that the pin didnt fit through the hole, no problem drill it out a bit bigger...nd the pin is to tall, so i said to hell with it and used the old perches, just easier. got the axle in, remade some brake lines and now all i need for the rear end is the driveshaft, softline and shocks...some pics, the welded spiders, pre cutting, i plan on bringing my wheel opening up 1.5" and back about 8" pics are with my 35" boggers on

IMGP3295.jpg

IMGP3292.jpg

found a few more pics that i had been looking for....nd havnt been able to find till now, just playing a little bit, took a piece of 2x4 and decided to try the flex out...didnt lift a tire but the trailer deck is maybe about 30" high...still, i was pretty happy with it

IMGP3343.jpg

IMGP3344.jpg

and then something i wasnt so happy about....shackel angle appeard to be the perfect 45deg angle i was looking for when i mocked everything up, made it a bit steeper cause there was no weight on it and when i dropped the truck down and drove it this happened
IMGP3345.jpg

so....im thinking i might build some longer shackels....add about an inch so im not getting the "big gay shackel lift" but enough to keep my springs offf the frame...

truck would have climbed right onto the trailer if my bumper hadnt started hitting the wheel well on the trailer...oh well...now im really starting to miss my project though....:censor::bang:
