Never owned a diesel this old and need to figure out how to do as much as i can myself.

The first thing i noticed was its thirsty and a little rough just above idle.

I bought it to tow, its got 400,000 km + odometer.
I need to start to tune it.
Where can i find a footing to take on this challenge, im a bit lost.

Go to the diesel section and read the FAQ and download the 2H manual.
Anything could be going wrong on a 400,000 km 2H. You're going to have to go through all the systems, one by one, and make sure everything is is in spec...

After you read up, you will probably have to take the pump and injectors down to have them checked out. Look around before you pay any money. Ask for reviews, not all shops are created equal and not all of them will actually be willing to spend time to help you out.

IDI engines are no different than DI in their troubleshooting except for the pre-chamber and glow plugs. While you have the injectors out, do a compression test. No sense throwing new injectors and a good pump on a motor that only has 200 lbs of compression in one hole.

They are such a simple and under-stressed engine... I would change the oil and filter, replace the diesel filter, replace the air filter and run some diesel additive through it. See how that goes before spending any more money. There are plenty of 2h 60 series cruisers in the north of Aus with twice that many k’s still running original injectors / pump (and probably oil... (just jokes...))..

Nice, replies. I was actually visiting a friend who suggested I change the oils. I always had help from family and friends when I lived in Australia. I'm almost on my own in these projects now I'm in Finland.

i found the 2h engine manual, ive been following links clicking clicking and more clicking to find an english owners manual 1982, i cant find one.
Ive got the original manual in the car but in finnish. Im trying to identify some of the internal buttons and knobs and the 3rd small gear stick.
Obviously i know the 4 speed shifter and i understand the L shape H2,H4,L4 shifter.

But the little one to the left as in this pic.Ahh , it sucks being the beginner.

I use rust prevention spray to keep the engine from drying out. Usually Krown, but I don't think it exists in EU...
I'm sure you have something like it...

How thirsty is it? Mine is at 375000 kms probably more with our road tax laws still starts faster than anything I've ever owned does between 13 and 14l/100km. I hope your not towing anything uphill in a hurry:)
