Well it looks really....ehm..... very .... greenish?

No serious.. judging from the pics it seems to be in good shape... i like the fact you can open the rear windows aswell. Previous owner didn't do any mods at all? Is this the older or lastest model 80 with the new dash etc?

This is the earlier model with the 12 valve engine and NO engine ECU, early dash but that was my preference anyway. The sliding windows were standard for the UK market, TBH I had thought about taking them out and fitting the JDM one piece units? The rearmost seats were going to be replaced with a drawer and fridge system for expedition use so the seats/windows may be surplus to requirements. Same as the rear heater system, that may also see the back of the garage.

The previous owner was a surgeon but on people not cars, the 80 is completely stock......except maybe for the cloth seats? I am getting told all different manner of things. It seems you could order the cloth seats over the electric and actually reduce the price at the time of ordering. In the UK pretty much every 80 VX has leather seats which burn your bum in summer and freeze you b*lls off in winter so I will go with the cloth at the moment. Of course the leather versions are all electric where this version has electric lumber support and heated pads fiited.

I am not too sure of my direction at the moment with this one Dutchy, it was easy with the Discovery just preped for competiton and it did us royal service. With the 80 I do not want to lose the ride quality if I can help it and also mods will be done as discreetly as possible.

Now, seriously, congratulations for it. You've been really lucky.

This is by far my favourite 80 model, a manual turbo diesel between 1993 and 1995.

It has the upgrades that my 1991 hasn't (bigger brakes, 16" stock wheels, bigger flares..), but still keeps the great 1HD-T, in my opinion better than the 1HD-FT thas was sold from 1995 to 1997. Well the 1HD-FT is maybe better in the high revolutions range, but the 1HD-T has better torque. I've driven both and that's what I felt and my friend with the 1HD-FT quite agrees.

I agree that the green colour looks terrific. You lucky b*****d, I'm jealous.

Can't wait to see what you do with it, considering the great job you did with the Discovery. And Dave, in the unlikely case you wanted to get rid of those great stock wheels, let me know as I will buy them from you.

Nah the green is mean and nasty Dave, metallic Red would be better, thanks for the kind words, perhaps you will trade your intercooler for my wheels?

I am still listing things to do but at the present no surprises just the original list I made when I bought it.

Just a quick question about the dash, have you ever heard of someone switching the earlier model for the later model?

Not at all, everyone I have spoken to about the dashboards all appear to prefer the earlier version however, I see no reason it cannot be done, things to look at are the bulkhead exit for the steering column, it is major items like that that need to be addressed. Switches/wiring ect can be moved, get the mechanical stuff right first. Compare the bulkheads ffrom under the bonnet first and go from there if you fancy having a go. Under dash mounts tend to be welded on so perhaps you may need a welder? Sorry I cannot be much help but in the near future I will be removing the dash and I will take pics of any mounts ect.

My colour combination is the one that is mean and nasty, besides being old fashioned. Sometimes I love it sometimes I hate it, but I may end up painting the flares and the low half in black and leave the silver top or maybe paint it white.

About the intercooler, don't tell me you'd be so barbarous as to cut a hole in that neat and ellegant green bonnet.

Now seriously, we in the spanish HDJ club get discounts on the 4wdbits intercoolers, both air to air and water to air, so if you want one just let me know and I'll get you the club price (about 20% discount in the air to air). The hardest part is to find the hood scoop though, took me a month looking into wreckers.

When I was still stupid enough to think I could get a mechanic to convert my RHD 80 into a LHD for a reasonable amount of money, I bought a 1991 LDH dash from a guy that had replaced it with the new dash from the 1995 model. He said it had been a hell of a job but he really liked the new version more.

Me personally I don't bother much, I think they both look good.

That is a lot of money for an intercooler considering you have additional shipping, tax, hoodscoop, cutting, painting, etc.
Was it worth the extra power gain? How much did you actually gain from the install. Personally I am not a fan of hoodscoops.

I paid 350 € for the intercooler itself including shipping and taxes.

But that was with a group buy of lots of stuff so the shipping was shared and quite cheap, the rate euro to nzd was 2.20 at that time so real good compared with the 1.90 that is now, and we also had the 20% club discount.

Then I paid 50€ for a Nissan Patrol Hood scoop in a junkyard and about 100€ for fitting, cutting the bonnet and painting.

So about 500€ in total. Not too bad considering that in euro4x4parts they ask you 2850 € for a top mount intercooler with bonnet scoop.

Anyway, that's crazy. The best kit is the Safari intercooler, but still the cheapest I could find it was 1400 € and it's a front mount, so I had to deal with the aditional transmission cooler I have in the front.

About the power gains, I had my pump already overfuelled, and didn't notice anything at low speeds just by bolting it in, but in the highway the improvement is really noticeable, it holds up the speed much easier in the hills. Also much less smoke under acceleration.

Then I turned the boost up to 0.9 bar with a couple of washers in the wastegate and now I feel the improvement in all the range. I may turn up the fuel a bit more but I want to fit a EGT gauge before.

Many thanks all, just a small update the engine has not consumed a drop of oil in the 1000 odd miles I have done so far since the new oil/filter went in. The radiator despite looking like someone went at it with a high pressure jet washer (taking out all the fins between the coolant tubes) has not lost a drop of water. I will start doing something in ernest on Thursday as the weather is set to improve, it's cold and nasty at the moment (yeh I know what a wimp!).

Early morning vibrations were annoying which turned out to be a) the heater pipe that come out from under the exhaust was rattling on the bulkhead or firewall, and b) the drivers door (RHD) mirror had one of the mounting lugs broken off, small dab of silicone and all should be well. For those following this thread the 'I will only work when the tank is briimmed' fuel gauge will be tackled sometime this week hopefully at the same time sorting the small leak that occurs when brimming.

Is your cruiser equiped with factory electric winch in front? and if not, are you planing to add?
I have vx limited edition cruiser with 1hd-t engine, and there is factory fridge in it with ice maker plant between the front seats..I think that it would be better to add factory fridge and avoid to modify factory starter.
it would be better to add 3rd battery in case of big fridge and futur winch
we have to avoid to bother toyota work

Hi and thanks for the reply. There is no factory winch at the moment but it will come later, I would have liked the factory fridge ect but in the UK I think they were standard (mostly) on the imports but then the imports rarely got the factory lockers so I took whatever came along first with the manual gearbox which in this case was lockers.

If a factory fridge came along cheap with all the pipes/amplifier ect I would fit it, re the 24v starter I am stuck in the mindset that it is just not necassary in this day and age with the later battery technology ect, of course I could end up eating some humble pie if it does not work but we will see.
