So, to the fuel gauge. I took out the sender unit https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/370046-fuel-gauge-fault-found.html#post5366459 and could see the resistance wire was a mess :( Until I can get a replacement the unit went back in but the filter was cleaned first. I would assume a new unit would come with a filter but will check. I did notice inside the tank was very clean but of course water goes to the lower part of the tank and is pulled into the seperator at the filter head in the engine bay. The low fuel light works ok as well but I do keep a gallon of diesel in the back for the moment, just in case;)

looking for owners/service manuals for my HDJ80L with!HD-T motor, H151F tranny, '94

Any chance you know where i can get english manuals for my '94 mexico version of this truck? I have manual locking front hubs, no lockers, and a dash mounted 4-wheel drive button system, and do not know the operating parameters for same. Oh, and I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!!!

Sorry nicaland, I know nothing about your truck but I would post this on the forum as a new thread as someone is bound to know.

FWIW the manuals you need may be found here Offroad 80's • View forum - The Shed

but I stress MAY BE.

Hey dave,

Did you get that iddle problem solved? If not I can give my garage a call to see if they recognize the problem since they deal with many 80's.

Grtz
Paul

Hi Paul I trust you and yours are well?

Right, as it has not really been a problem I returned the idle to the 600 rpm and the car drives fine. I can cause the idle to fall if I am facing up a steep hill but it is nothing that gives me concern. Again facing down hill the revs rise slightly?

I spoke to a few guys in the UK with the diesels and it seems to be almost common, some put in an electric pump to help the feed pump that is built into the main injection pump however, most do not bother to do anything. One guy has had six diesels and they all done it including his current one. If he is on a trail that involves steep climbs he pulls the hand throttle out a little and has never had an issue. My car continues to run great so at the moment I am really pleased with it.

I do not even think about it now Paul but if your man has any ideas then let me know?

Many thanks

And what was I up to over the holiday? Well I removed the old radiator which I knew was falling apart but never lost a drop of water over the last three thousand miles, the pics say it all.

I also found some mornings my fan belt/s would squeal for a few moments until the charge to the batteries lowered and the belts gripped, the PO thought the adjusting bracket was broken so in preparation I had already purchased a new assembly including all the bolts ect, I had also purchased new top and bottom hoses to go with the new rad. Well once the radiator was out I could see the alternator bracket was intact so removed the alternator for a closer look, the bottom bolt hole was elongated allowing the alternator to twist on it's mount. The bracket on the engine had also taken it's fair brunt of wear as well. As it was the holiday weekend I could not get a new bracket so reinstalled the alternator with two packing washers and two new belts and pulled it up tight.

It is now in line with the pulleys and there is no squealing, my intention as part of the expedition mods was to fit a higher amperage alternator ect so I will replace the bracket at the same time, for the present the original alternator works fine.

I will leave you with three photo's of the rad and alternator, the rad is pretty impressive virtually no fins left and still not leaking a drop,I have looked the the service history and there is no mention of a replacment radiator so I must assume it is original, I have replaced the rad with a pattern aluminium/plastic which appears to be identical to the original except I decided to fit an automatic version, my plan at a later date is to pipe water through the radiator transmission cooler for warm washing water for use during off road stints ect.

Just a note, the top two radiator bolts are sleeved and both snapped on removal, it is OK to put back a couple of conventional bolts but the rad is not supported properly within the rubber mounts so they are on this weeks shopping list!

Thanks for looking.

OK next update! Friday I started the front axle overhaul stripping, cleaning, greasing and reassembling ect. The RH side (drivers on mine) went according to plan and this side was the one where the swivel was nice and dry. Apart from a split pin needing to be drilled out of the steering drag link all went well.

Now to the other side, this one was leaking oil/grease quite badly and finding the breather blocked was nothing new however, once I had dismantled everything and started to clean I found the CV or Birfield had a strange wear mark on the outer ridge of the CV body. It seems the bronze bush in the front cover is badly worn? The birf flaps about inside the cover like a prick in shirt sleeve! So that will be ordered Monday evening, the joint does not appear to have any damage on the bearing surfaces and there was no nasty noises either, has anyone seen this before?

I have added a couple of pics for your perusal, also having heard of forum members in the past having their front lower arms work loose I decided to replace the four studs on each side, these studs are a 'torx' style and fitted nice and tight with a little loctite. The brake pads have seen better days so can someone post me the Toyota part number for the larger pads that have been fitted on 80's to reduce or at least slow the wear rate please? IIRC they were for a 100 or 105 series?

I will get back to you later this week when the other parts arrive.

Many thanks

Whoa, is that locknut in the last photo OEM Toyota? If so, that's an interesting (and recent) change.

No not Toyota, I got these and the rest of the overhaul kit from Milners in the UK, you will find them here:

http://www.milneroffroad.com/Default.asp?c=113410

They specialise in everything Japanese and have recently added Ford to the range, they are particularly good IMO for example, when you order their axle overhaul seal kit you get everything you need without having to hunt about for a missing gasket ect, they supply the trunnion shims to set the preload ect.

The only thing anyone has commented on with a negative tone is the oil seal they use for the inner half shaft, it is not as good as the Toyota OE version or the double lip h/d version made by marlin.

The loosening stud problem is well known so they came up with these studs that allow you to use a torx socket and wrench to set them properly and then fit the nylocs. They understand the diesel big end problem so supply ACL bearings ect, they are very good with delivery times as well and I have used them numerous times, no affiliation blah blah.........

BTW, I have cleaned and kept aside a set of 4 studs and nuts just in case I (or anyone I'm with) has a problem whilst out on a trail, then there is a spare set available.

Green is a great color :grinpimp:!

Well the car has had a few washes now and it does not look so bad in the sun, I hope I am not starting to like the colour

I told you it was good truck!
Apart from the Cumbrian weather effects of the last decade or so ....

Its good to know that you are cherishing this great machine.

Faz Oxford

Hi Faz and yes it is turning out to be a good car, if you have read all the thread and the links I have put in you will gather I am very pleased, after you gave me the previous owners number (again thank you) I went to view it along with a few other cars and this this one turned out to be the best. As you said the Cumbrian weather has not been to kind to it looks as though it stood in a two foot puddle for a year, nothing a good brushing and waxoyling will not sort out.

regards

Dave

The underside on my own '97 HDJ82 is similar and definetly needs a brushing... the weather is improving so one of these days it will be done as I have bought the chassis paint etc

All the best to you Dave - you are doing a great job with it. :)

Thanks for that Faz, this my first post to the forum for awhile due to some personal strife. Now settled in a new albeit temporary home I hope to get on track with the car, I can cross off the list the leaking windscreen which was making the carpet wet whilst in the car wash or during heavy rain, I had a local company take out the screen last week and supply and fit a new rubber, so far so good!

Take it easy,

Well another job crossed off the list, you may recall I had a small leak when filling the tank? This only seemed to occur when either using a high speed commercial pump or if putting in a lot of fuel from a standard type pump.

The leak was getting worse and I had to keep fuel to a minimum, I could not put in for example 50 litres as a lot ended up on the floor, if I put in perhaps 25 litres slowly I hardly lost a drop but it was a bit of a pain. the problem was caused by corrosion where the fill and vent tubes are welded together, I have attached a piccy for perusal and no it's not my pool/house, the small pin holes are obvious but to the left of them you can also see a crack where the two pipes meet, this brought about a veritable shower under the car!

I assume the paint did not take too well and bearing in mind my car was from one of the wettest areas of the UK it is no surprise there was a problem. A phone call to a not so local dealer told me he was going to reduce my wealth by a rediculous 78 euros plus taxes and it would take a week to get here!!

Yeah right, I went to the local boat builders yard and got me some flexible reinforced fuel pipe in the right sizes and then cut out the 'bad bit' with a dremel, getting a saw up there was going to be a RPITA, remember this is diesel!

New clips and new pipes and all is well at the pump test this evening all sorted for the princely sum of 18 euros with all new clips ect. :bounce::bounce:

I gave the props a grease up whilst under there as that is never a bad idea and all appears to be good, right what's next?

AARGH!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Two steps forward and three back! I have just notice my newly sealed axle is leaking at one of the swivels and later in the day the heavens open and my newly sealed windscreen decides to leak!:bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:

I am going home to sulk!

So today I had the new windscreen rubber sealed with a polyurothane (is that spelt right?) motorised gun so hopefully that will put the leaking screen issue to bed, car wash Sunday using the high pressure option and I will let you know how it went.

I have ordered new axle seals from Toyota and will fit them next week delivery permitting, I have also now got the correct rad bolts for the top of the rad, they are called 'collar radiator' part number is 16549-61020 and are prone to breaking even if slightly corroded which mine were.

Gearbox has a tiny leak at the speedo sensor seal, as the oil is being changed next week I ordered up one of those as well along with the fuel gauge sender unit as per https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/370046-fuel-gauge-fault-found.html#post5366459 and that will give me something to do, again waiting for delivery.

I came to Spain for a quieter and slower pace of life and found there are only two modes here......slow and stop! It can be very frustrating so whilst your body might be resting whilst you are waiting but your head is in a spin with 'manyana' being the only word commonly used by everyone, I must get used to this pace of life or I will go crazy!!

Dave
