finished! I may regret not making it swing out some day but since my tailgate is a bolt on, I couldn't justify the extra time and expense right now.

front bumper

I've been working on a front bumper. I wanted something that had more clearance, held the winch more securely, looked better, and was relatively easy to make. I'm getting a little tired of metal work, mostly the mess that it leaves in the garage.

I started with a DIY Jeep bumper from AtoZfabrication

To mount it, I had to make some brackets. I cut some brackets out of an old winch plate and drilled some holes. Also, I had to cut a couple tabs off of the bumper. And, I welded a couple gussets on the backside for strength. Overall, I'm very happy with it, for no more than it cost or time it took.

Anyone recognize the tow hook loops that I mounted on top? The hole spacing was perfect, so I had to use them. They still need painted.

Also, I still need a better way of mounting my solenoid box. I just have it zip tied to the top of the winch for now...

I'm starting my next phase: redline family roll cage, mastercraft seats (I don't like my Miata seats and someone offered what I paid for them), and I'm converting to a split transfer case after a lot of trouble with two different 3 speed cases.

Thanks Mike!

I'm finally getting started mounting my seats. First step was to cut/grind away all the old mounts. Then I cut some square tubing to mount the new seats. These Mastercraft seats mount soo much easier than the Miata seats!

Note: I should cut out the round tubing also, but I probably won't after wrestling with the old mounts this morning (cutoff wheels, grinder, air chisel)

You can see part of my Redline roll cage kit laying on the floor. UPS lost the main hoop and halo, but Justin has me a replacement on the way. I'm probably going to have someone put it together for me. I don't trust my welding/fabricating ability to a roll cage just yet.

found a crack in my split case?

I was cleaning my new split case and noticed a tiny "crack". It doesn't appear to go all the way through to the inside. I'm not even sure if its a crack or some kind of casting defect. What do you think? Should I get another one, leave it alone, or have it welded?

You will love your Redline cage! Justins work kicks ass and so does the customer service. Here is a pic of mine he helped to install.

The cage is finished. I'm happy with how it turned out. I had a local fab shop do the work for various reasons.

transfer case problem

I got the cage in, but now I have a problem with the 1983 FJ60 split transfer case that I'm swapping in. I bought the transfer case missing a front output flange. When I ordered the rebuild kit, I ordered a front output flange but now I'm wondering if I got the wrong one.

The "deflector" on this one isn't big enough to go over the aluminum case. If i tightened the nut, it would crush this deflector. Does anybody out there have one that they can measure?

Also all my diagrams show a square flange but this one is round. Is that just a difference between OEM and aftermarket? Or did I get the wrong one?

If I can get this rig wheel able in time, I'm taking it to Moab at the end of September. If not its going to be dirt bikes. But I'd rather take my fj40. Here's the latest progress:

Clearance for the new transfer case and crossmember. This is a IPOR skid plate that I had to modify.

Anti-wrap bar

Today I'm working on my anti-wrap bar. This will be as close to centered on the axle as I can get it. Hopefully it won't limit travel or have any binding. We'll see.

But first I'm going to install my new steering box.

Red head steering gear
Need to cut the nipple off of the input shaft.

Nice build! Your doing great metal work. I hear you about it making a mess of your workspace tho. Gets a little old
Good looking rig you are building:beer:

Thanks! Well the box is installed and it still has drag and doesn't return to center. Must be the pump.

Anti wrap bar progress

Don't put the bushings in to mock it up and definitely don't think you can weld it with the bushings in there (since they're so hard to remove)

In your earlier posts you were using what I call is a Kansas Jack in some of the pics. I have been looking for one for some time however not able to locate one. Any ideas as to where I can find one and am I calling it the proper name, these were used in body shops in the past. TNX Skip Landon
