it runs hot when going up steep grade or in traffic with the a/c on or towing
dont know whats wrong just got the coolant flush and its still runs hot
any suggestion would help

thanks in advance

Charong,

Typical cooling system inspection is needed immediately:
1. Check or replace the fan clutch as Phil suggested
2. Check the radiator for blockage (internal and external).
This will usually appear as gray sludge internally and might be mud or bugs externally.
3. Check or replace the thermostat
4. Check or replace the radiator cap
5. Check for bubbles in the overflow bottle. If you have bubbles, then heed Chris' suggestion and replace the HG now.

Are you losing coolant?

no loss of coolant and no bubbles

but its runs cool when coming down the grade or highway speed or normal driving

its only runs hot when engine understress

Charong,

What about the other items listed in Beowulf's list ?

RAD look clean but not sure if its blocked
took the cap off when it stiill warm lots of coolant flow out form the RAD
maybe its not flowing but when run on higher rmp its seem to flow

not sure how to check the thermostat and fan cluth
is this a commom problem?
i am lost!!!

charong, I had exactly the same problem. I changed the fan fluid coupling, the thermostat and replaced the radiator with a 1994 3 core brass rad, as well as flushed the cooling system. Runs very cool ever since, and cannot get the needle to move, even when pulling a 3500lb boat up long steep mtn passes. I am also supercharged so I need a properly functioning cooling system. BTW, I now flush the cooling system and put in new toyota red every year.
Cheers,
Sean

I recently replaced the fan clutch. My old clutch you would get about a full turn when you tried to spin it when hot. By some standards would be OK but I replaced it anyway. The new one will spin about 1/2 turn but it did cool better. A bad or weak fan clutch is not uncommon at least her in AZ.

I would see if Cdans dogs are hungry.
Cheers,
Sean

Radiator, 16400-66040

Fan clutch, 16210-66020

I have both in stock.

I want to do a flush this weekend....anybody got E999's pics, or any pics for that matter of the hose hooking up process?

You didn't state the mileage on the truck. I'd skip the rad replacement right now and go with the fan coupling. Also check teh exterior of the radiator fins closely for dirt and debrise that would restrict air flow.

117k on my 97
thanks guys for all the replied i will change my fan clutch and see if it works

cruiserdan
how much is the rad and is it new or reman?

One other thing to check that wasn't mentioned is the water pump, though since you say you're not loosing coolant, this is probably not the cause. Look around the pump for signs of dried pink residue (assuming you have the Toyota coolant). When mine went, it was coming out the weep hole and dripped onto the belt which made it paint a stripe of pink crusties in the plane of the belts.

At this point, my bet is on the fan clutch and/or radiator.

Toyota radiators are new. The 16400-66040 lists for $501.24 and a smart shopper could likely find one for around $375.93

I did not have the balls to do the fan clutch test (I like my fingers attached to my hand) a more tell tale sign that it need replacement is a new/good one will audibly race the fan for a few seconds on cold start, you will also hear it after sitting at a stop light on a hot day with the AC running, my old one (106K miles) did none of these the new one does them all, also the new one from Dan is the 3 stage Aisin, the one that was originally installed was the 2 stage (forget the manufacturer)

this may sound like shot gunning but If you have overheat problems on an 80 I think its more Preventive maintenance, I would replace, the fan clutch, T-stat , cap and PHH inspect the visible portions of the radiator interior wile the fluid is out (cant see with coolant in there) and flush the system refill with Toyota Red and distilled water

I went down the "a bit warm path" last summer/fall and I replaced the clutch (which helped but was not enough) then I replaced the radiator (93 with 115k) All is good at the moment.
