Geographical Center of Nevada... Very exciting

A landing at Creech AFB (Indian Springs, NV)... When I first spotted it coming in, I thought it was a billboard over the mountains... By the time I got pulled over and focused my camera, I could only get the top half

Danny, what is that big bag of salt for in your gear pile?

Ryan, I eat a lot of fowl... Surely you know, the easiest way to catch a bird, is by sprinkling salt on its tail!!

Actually, I had to go back and look at the picture... That's a bad of salt crystals for the water softener... I had just bought it and hadn't used it yet.

The "sprinkling salt" is an old wives' tale... Possibly too old for a younger like you..

I thought it might be for the house and not 44.

But one never knows.

I’ve heard the old timers talk about salt on the tail!!!

Mt Jefferson? In Nevada? Nah! It's due east of Salem, on the Cascades summit.

In reality, I guess that name is rather popular and can be found in several places. In Oregon Mt Jefferson has an elevation of 10,495ft, and is an old volcano. It sets at the confluence of Jefferson, Marion, and Linn counties (I'm in the northwestern part of Linn). I've backpacked into Jefferson Park which is located on the northwest flank of the mountain. In the mornings we (my wife and I) listened to the glaciers calving and spitting off chunks of ice. The way we went in, from the north and Breitenbush Lake, was 7 miles (if I can trust this old memory) from that direction along the summit. Jefferson Park is BEAUTIFUL, with several small lakes and is quiet, until the weekend when it is invaded by the backpacking hordes (I was surprised). Of course, this was before kids, and they will be 31 at the end of May, so this has been a few years ago.

My first trip to that area was before I was married, and I had a late 60's Bronco. It was a rough road into Brietenbush Lake from the west side, yet I saw a two wheel drive rig traveling that road.

Tell me all about the Nevada Mt Jefferson.

Don

Well Don... We didn't get to the top of Mt Jefferson... But, I know, from reading and viewing pictures, that our Mt Jefferson has some meteorological equipment or something... And that there are one or two small alpine lakes on one of the three summits.

The bottom half(?) of the trail is overgrown, flooded (in places) and fraught with the dangers inherent in hiking alone, over 4-6" smooth, round, River Rock... then you get into a "zone" that is covered in ticks, from big horn sheep... I carried (and used) a Permithrin (sp?) mixture to make sure we didn't carry them along with us... after that... We had turned around before we got into the snow and ice.

Looks like the forecast has changed again... Less accumulated snow... More snow days... And the wind chill is damned cold,.. Glad we came home!! NOTE: this forecast is for a large area... It's actually colder than indicated... And may still see more snow accumulated than indicated

Here's a blurb in Mr Jefferson and the Alta Toquima Wilderness

Last time I was out there I had my ladder up to secure some loose shingles on the roof, I should have left it up. You could have got a good shot from my roof, less than 300 yards to the base :).

Thank you for the pics Danny!! Almost all of the pics remind me of some places I have been/seen somewhere in Oregon, usually eastern Oregon, absolutely beautiful. Not just Oregon, but your pics show me that Nevada is also a beautiful state. The pics that you did get were great., too bad the weather wasn't co-operating with you.

Also, thanks for the link to Mt Jefferson and the Alta Toquima Wilderness. The very first pic instantly made me think of driving to the top of Steens Mountain, which is the highest maintained summer time road in Oregon. This trip (the kids were just over two months old) was quite a while ago, but I still remember it. I've included a link to the area.

Kinda think that those of us following your thread look forward to your ‘vacations’ as much or maybe more than you do! :)

Thanks for the link Don... very interesting... and strikingly similar to places I’ve seen in NV!!

Chester and I are leaving, to resume our trip, in the morning... heading to the Quinn Canyon Wilderness this time... a little rain, a little snow and not nearly as cold, in the QCW forecast.

Next week is forecast to be much warmer in QCW, so we’ll probably move back up to the Toyoibe Range, on the east side of the Reese River Valley, by then.

Here’s a QCW description
