I have a 02 LX470. The AHC is not functioning as it should and I think it’s time to replace it. I’m not rock crawling or hardcore off road. Mostly city driving and weekend adventures that find us on dirt roads and camping trips. I was a simple but reliable suspension, plus a new baby means I need affordable. I came across these and was hoping to get some honest feedback on them. I’ve searched forum but haven’t found anything so here I am. Thanks for any advice.

I have no personal experience, but most of what I’ve read here is the OME shocks are stiff.

You can likely fix your AHC for the same $ as replacing it. But, If you are going to replace it, I’d put Toyota Land Cruiser shocks, TBs and springs for your use case. Very capable, comfortable and affordable. You can likely get TBs and springs for next to nothing from someone building a truck.

I had a 2 inch lift from OME and it was very stiff. Switched to OEM shocks in the front and it was much better after also making sure I had the correct droop. Still have the rear shocks and springs but I have a bumper and sliders so it's better now. switched to dobinsons shocks in the front now. Make sure you research and get the correct springs for your normal weight.

I have the OEM shocks with less that 5k miles I can send you for cheap if you would like. Also just had our first kid congrats man!!

What is the problem with the AHC?

There are plenty knowledge here about AHC, recommend to do a bit of research and figure out what's wrong with it. Then the cost to fix it by getting parts from amayama or other online dealers. Of cause you have to DIY. Nice people here will help you out. All you need to do is ask help/questions.

I'd like to think "mudifying" suspension on an AHC vehicle in 2023 translates to "fixing AHC".

OME suspension is notoriously harsh and stiff for anything other than heavily armored off-roading.

Based on your use case, you want AHC. That's the best suspension option you've got and by a significant margin, IMO.

Just fix AHC. It's not that complicated and it's typically cheaper to repair it (most commonly it's even free - torsion bar adjustment). On top of that, it's the best road-going suspension out there.

What is the problem with the AHC?
The biggest issues is that it will drop from the mid(drive) height to the lower height while I am idling or at a stop light. It also drops overnight. There are no signs of leaks and I had my mechanic hook it up to his computer and he found no issues with it. Along with that, it is just a really harsh ride. I have been told that replacing the globes could fix that but I am hesitant to drop that money in new globes and still have the issue. Figure I would rather spend that money and replace it with a little more simple of a system.

I have looked and tried but not any solutions to my issue. Or I haven't found any.

So if I am reading this right you insalled a similar set up but they were just really stiff?

Congrats on the kid. This our second, and man what a game changer. lol.

Yes I think it is the same setup. I dont think you really need aftermarket T-bars either for what you will be running so you can save some money there. If I were you I would go OEM front shocks (crank up t bars to raise front 1-1.5 inches (so you still have a comfy ride but have some lift as well) and then go with some dobinson or OME springs with a little bit higher weight rating so you get a lift in the back and will be nicely set up. I wouldn't do the nitrocharger shocks but if you want to try them out I have the set I took off mine and can send them to you for $20 plus shipping. Changing fronts is easy if you want to test OEM and OME but changing the back shocks is more of a pain.

Did you read the post from UhU regarding maintenance of the AHC system?
Do you know what the pressures are?
Do you have additional weight in the back causing the system to drop to Low?
Did you flush the system with fresh AHC fluid? Cheap thing to do.
