I will be by both NAPA and Mike's if no one has the time to go by and pick up the parts before they close. You can call my cell @ 259-3169 since I won't be at a computer the rest of the day.

here's the plan, Ali is going to get the filter, then meet me at work. i will unload the 40 and we will drive up together to get Shaun. if he is fixed with the filter-golden. if not, we will haul him and cruiser here. let's hope we get ahead of this storm.

Great plan. Good luck guys.

Crap, I better call our mechanic back. He was going to call for the filter to make sure they had it. Hope everything work out.

Actually in looking over the symptoms I would not think it was a clogged filter opening up the bypass, unless the bypass works in some weird way. I would think the bypass would hold the pressure at whatever is required to activate it. I'd find some low viscosity oil (diesel approved) and change that, as high viscosity oil may be the problem.

ok, I'm off to pick up filter at Napa.

Ali

OK - here's the latest on filter availability. I have been talking with Ali and calling everywhere in town to check. Luckily, Shaun did find a Napa filter on 4th street and reserved it, because the next closest one is in Denver. I have confirmed availability at Napa on 4th street.

I also tried the Fram and found that the stock number in the list above (PH 4707) is incorrect. The one that does cross-reference with the others is PH 4704. But it cannot be found anyway. Autozone and Pep Boys do not stock it. Checker can get the Fram, but not until 12/27.

Carquest does carry a Wix, but it's in the warehouse and will take a couple of hours (stock number has changed from 51627 to 85627).

The bottom line - Ali is going to pick up the Napa filter on 4th street and head to Santa Rosa with Shawn Williams. Good luck guys!

Evan

I called Shaun just to check in with him on the filter availability for future reference. He is very appreciative of the help. Hopefully he can get on the road in advance of the storm(s) headed our way.

I just got a text message from Ash.

Heading back. HJ is doing fine

That's all I know.
-Mike-

I was texting with Ash just before we flew to Des Moines and it's acting up again. They had it on the trailer and were heading back to ABQ. I offered our shop and tools, but that was almost two hours ago, so they should be at least close to home by now. I'm still flying a couple more hours tonight, but I'll have the phone on when I can, and I'll pass along any updates as I get them.

Dan

Ash called and they are back at his house. They changed the oil with new oil and filter, but the oil pressure guage was still acting up. So they loaded the HJ up on the trailer and dragged it back to Tijeras.

It sounds like they are planning a break this evening, and then start checking things out tomorrow, with the first thing to be checked the stock OP gauge and/or oil pressure sender. If the engine is getting reasonable pressure, but just the gauge is acting up, then Ash will likely send him on his way, depending on the weather.

I'm sure Ash will post shortly with more details.

we're at our house, HJ pulled into garage. After some grub and destressing, we'll check the oem oil press gauge against a mech gauge just to see what's happening. We'll take it from there!

She's a beauty though! :D

I don't know s*** about the H motor but it looks like the oil pump spline on the crankshaft is not keyed. The oil pump drive gear on a 1FZ is not keyed and is held in place by clamping force from the crank pulley. If the 1FZ crank bolt is not tight the engine loses oil pressure and power steering assist because the PS pump is driven by the same gear.

Maybe the same thing can happen to an H motor?

Whew! much longer day than i anticipated, but we at least got him to where there's more help. lucky that i had my trailer and 40 at work with me, which saved about 80 miles. let's hope we can get him rolling under it's own power to get home. :steer:

edit: that thing is CLEAN! no rust and the cool factor of diesel and right hand drive.

Did they try to tighten up that oil pump drive gear? Easy to tell if the power steering loses it too...

Power steering pump is NOT driven by the crankshaft; it has a separate pulley and driven by a belt.

We were trying to figure out how to tighten that mondo c-shaft nut w/o removing the radiator fan and shroud....

We did pull out the electric oil press sending unit and put in a mechanical gauge. The oil press at 2500 rpm is at 80 (spec is 36-85psi). He left the house for a conservative test drive along with my GPS. I'm standing by for a phone call in case he needs a rope tow back home :D

It's snowed 1" at the house in the last hour already!

Fingers crossed.

No snow yet here.
