I have an 8274 that I've been slowly rebuilding as I'm not sure if I wanted to use it or not. This is purely aesthetic, I want to keep the stock bumper but I don't like how high the 8274s need to be mounted to get the fairlead over the bumper.

So what do you all think about mounting the winch in reverse, so that I can unspool the cable from the top of the drum and sink the winch between the rails while the fairlead stays on top? I figure there would be some housing mods required on the motor side of the winch, but the drum side can just be clocked. Then the solenoids need to be wired so that "in" and "out" don't get switched on the controller...

Am I missing anything? Brake, etc, should all still work, I think...

Would that put all the pulling pressure on the 4 mounting bolts? When you mount it upright the bolts just hold the wieght of the winch the bumper holds the pulling pressure.

If I used the stock mounts on the motor-side of the drum, then yes, the pulling force would be on the bolts. I think what I'd do is make some alternate mount of the "back" side of the winch housing so that, as usual, the pulling pressure is just against the bumper.

(I should add I'd also reinforce the stock bumper.

I like the idea.. anyone have any other reasons it would not work?? Brake may not work? Gears may be Cut to hold one way, and not be strong on that side..

i think im going to sink my fairlead into the bumper so that its not exposed to the rocks.. and mount it normaly!

Just sell or trade the winch and buy a normal non-8274 winch and be done with it. Sorry, but what you are talking about doing is just silly and dangerous.

Oh I agree its silly :D

I've got this "bird in the hand" though, and I like the idea of using it over a planetary.

To get this straight, the winch would mount as normal except the cable would be spooled in the oposite direction? The goal is to have it somewhere between a high mount and regular? The low mount you don't want because the fairlead is low?

The brake mechanism would need to be reversed somehow to work. The disk itself is easy, just the ratchet could be trouble. The motor and spur gears probably wouldn't care that they would pull in the reverse direction.

EDIT: Re-read your post. I would not trust turning the gear housing facing the truck. The cast housing is not meant to spread the load of those two bolts in tension. A shock load could cause it to fail/tear out the bolts.

Why not sink it a few more inches and run the fairlead under the bumper?

If you are going to run the cable over the top, why does the winch have to be mounted backwards?

I have seen them mounted that way. As long as the mount is built strong enough it would work. I just don't see why you would go to all the trouble.

What I find funny is that you want to do this for "aesthetic" reasons. How you don't find the 8274 mounted with a hole in the center of the bumper for the fairlead like god intended it to be aesthetically pleasing I don't understand.

Common sense?

Do you have the owners/operation manual for this winch?

If not, do yourself a favor before you go any further and call WARN, 800 543 WARN (9276) and get one; they are free.

Here here; and not until you or someone else gets injured will you realize the danger involved with winching.

Then either purchase a bumper that will properly, safely and securely mount the winch you currently have and be done with it, or sell it.

I wasn't planning on loading those in tension - I was planning on devising some new mounting scheme on the "back" of the gear housing.

I would keep the fairlead in the bumper, I agree, that looks nice. But I'd lower the winch so that retarded solenoid pack isn't sticking up.

Gimme a break man, CCOT can draw a winch bumper on a napkin, make it out of channel, and sell it for $80 bucks and there is nothing inherently safer about it than something well thought out that you can make at home.

Now, maybe this plan is indeed poorly thought out, which is what I guess you guys are saying. But lets give it a sporting chance, geez!

This its the way that the PO mount the warn 8274.:meh:

1) its have a plate welded to the frame and the roller on the same plate,so you can use any factory bumper
2) the bad..the only way that you can add a Power Steering ( if you dont have Saginaw box already) its using the 84-85 mini truck...fj60 box or scout box and using the factory system.
3) few member will point on the air flow toward the radiator cos the winch will be '' high'' to block the cold air
4) about your idea on using the winch other than the way that was design for use..i really don't like it
5) maybe i don't know too much to bring more ideas..just my x 2:hmm:

By chance are you a mechanical engineer?

By chance are you a mechanical engineer?

Yes. Aeronautical, specifically.

I can't tell if you were looking for a Yes so you could say "no wonder you're such a jerk" or if you were looking for a No so you could say "thats why it won't be safe". :D

You can mount the solenoid pack remotely, i.e. under the hood if you don't think it looks good.

Ok-

Have you ever operated a winch?

Have you ever operated a winch while doing vehicle recovery?

Have you ever operated an 8274 Warn winch?

i will sell my serviced 8274 with mounting plate, 150' steel cable, remote control, roller ,towing hooks and cover if you want it,i read that you almost finish to clean yours..but just in case...( the one on my 40 its a 8274-50 with synthetic rope..not for sale)

Ok-

Have you ever operated a winch while doing vehicle recovery?

Have you ever operated an 8274 Warn winch?

Errr.... no. :D

but, but, I've seen it done!!

The question is, have you ever seen an 8274 used mounted in reverse?? :D
