other memorable movies in my youth:

Doctor Shivago and Crystal Voyager (a surf movie long before they became all the rage)

and, I have considered the Steve Spielberg Duel movie as prototypical American - [all along the German in me kept asking "what's the problem, really ? why doesn't he just go faster ?"]

I still think of that movie every time I have a big truck in my rear view mirror when I am in the Miata

Forgot about that one. Dunno why I like it but I do.

Also remembered 10 today, mainly because I went with my parents. First R movie, and a bit awkward at moments! 1979, so I would have been 12. Oh, Bo...

Pink Panther movies with Sellers were great too!

Austrian hotel clerk, "Does your dog bite?"

Sellers, "No."

clerk pets the dog and is bit.

clerk, "I thought you said your dog does not bite?"

Sellers, "That is not my dog."

I should mention that I watch movies very infrequently, so my repertoire is quite limited

more recent memorable movies include "The Lives of Others" and "The Need for Speed"

oh wait, nobody mention the Rocky Horror Picture Show yet ?

Oh man... so many...

Blade Runner, because it just completely embodied for me all the cool Science Fiction I read in my youth and it was so damn perfect. Flying Cars! Humanoid robot things! 10,000 foot tall buildings!

The Sound of Music, Julie Andrews just absolutely kills the singing in this. Even knowing that Christopher Plummer hated doing the movie, and Austrians have never heard of a song titled "Aidelweiss" it's still fantastic. I own it on Blu-Ray and we watch it EVERY Christmas.

Apollo 13. I'm a huge space geek and this gets (most) of it pretty damn right. Plus the launch sequence sounds awesome.

The original Lord of The Rings Trilogy (not that crappy "let's make some money" Hobbit thing Jackson just finished). Speaking of getting it perfect, reading the Ring Trilogy as a kid, then seeing the exact thing as I imagined it... wow. I saw Return of The King twice at the Cine Capri when it was originally released. I own all 37,000 hours of Director's Cut DVD special release. No, I don't have the geeky miniature sword (but I know it's name).

Jurassic Park, the original and still the best. When Sam Neill's character grabs Laura Dern's head and turns her towards the Brontosaur... LOL

Duel.

Pulp Fiction. "Oh, THAT what now!"

Le Mans with Steve McQueen. Ferrari refused to allow their cars in the movie because the script called for Porsche to win.

Of course the original Star Wars, before it was called A New Hope.

And old stuff:

In Harm's Way

Run Silent, Run Deep

Where Eagles Dare

The Andromeda Strain (the original) Oh and that's 2 Michael Crichton books...

You Only Live Twice. Toyota 2000GT, scenery...

Raising Arizona
Caddy Shack
Tommy Boy
Mad Max
Pulp Fiction
The Princess Bride
A Clockwork Orange
Carrie
Beverly Hills Cop
Dirty Harry

Mindless movies but memorable characters
Silence of the Lambs

Breakfast at Tiffany's. Who doesn't think Audrey Hepburn was hot

Gone With the Wind, saw this Christmas Day 1970, waiting for my dad to get home so we could open presents He was an airline pilot

Most chilling: Johnny got his gun. Especially the ending.

Most frightening: American Werewolf in London. I don't know why but that movie freaked me out.

Stupidity as and art form: anything from Mel Brooks or Monty Python. Brilliantly warped bastids, all.

Blazing Saddles - might be the funniest movie ever made

The sensors made Mel cut the best line in that movie. In the "you people are gifted" scene. That last line in the original cut was "madam, you're sucking on my arm.":lol:

A movie that is rather understated, and should be liked by most off-the-road men and some women:

RUBBER :steer:

I'll let you find out what it is about ... you can simply Google the word and it's the first hit on my system [ymmv].

... on the other hand, here's the trailer: http://www.rubberthemovie.com/

One more time....

x2 Princess Bride
Dumb and Dumber
National Lampoons Vacation and Christmas Vacation
Passion of the Christ
Cast Away
Big
Money Pit, since I'm on the Tom Hanks trail (this is very close to my favorite, hilarious).

Oh yeah I forgot about Mad Max. Even the latest one was great. "2,000 horsepower war rig".

American Werewolf in London. I don't know why but that movie freaked me out.

I liked that too. Saw several times at the midnight movies along with: Dawn of the dead , Day of the dead, and the animated Heavy Metal.
