So I put a deposit down on a LC. I had planned to spend quite a bit more and go a little newer/lower miles but this one was for sale at the local Lexus dealer and my salesguide convinced me to come see it. Looks nice, real clean, one owner and they traded for an '06 LX. It's a '98 with 94K and good service records. I'm having them do the 90K before I agree to buy it.

Is there anything else on a '98 I should be checking into outside of normal stuff you look at on any used car? I know I should search but it's 11 and I've got a meeting at 8:30 in the morning an hour away so I'm going to sleep instead of spending the entire night reading LC pron.

TIA!

You should know that the 98 LC's don't have rear AC. Check for exhaust manifold leak/crack on cold start-up.

Starter if it hasn't been done. If it hasn't failed yet (starter contacts that is), it's bound to pretty soon.

Check the underside bolts/nuts for rust corrosion...boy do I sound like a broken record on this one

er....I mean a scratched CD for all you young newb's

No rear a/c would be a crime in Houston. Be forwarned, You may be clubbed by your rear passengers. :D

Thanks for the responses fellas! I was concerned about the lack of rear A/C as well. I test drove it in the afternoon when it was pretty hot outside and checked out how bad it was in the back and it was acceptable. With the rear A/C it would I'm sure be better, but I don't carry people around in the back all that often and if it's too bad I can use my Range Rover that does have A/C in the back. I'm not sure about the starter but it looked clean underneath. It's a local Houston one-owner car so no salty winters. Even if the starter has to be done soon driving Land Rovers for almost ten years now I'm sure I'm going to fine with the maintenance on a LC.

Hehe, that's a good outlook on the maintenance. Our's cools down inside pretty fast without running the rear a/c. When do ya pick it up? :D

Should be ready to be picked up by tomorrow evening. I preferred to finance it but it looks like it isn't so easy on something this old. The Lexus dealer is supposed to call me in the morning to let me know what/if they found a lender that will do a car that old. If not I guess I'll either go ahead with it or have them find me something newer. They're waiting to do the 90K service until they know for sure I'm buying it...as soon as that's done it's ready. I'm hoping to have it soon so I can take it on a short road trip next Tuesday up to Dallas to take the rotten teenager (AKA 16 year old brat) to see the Basketball game.

Don't listen to 'em Brit! I'm in Houston, mine's a '98 and the AC has been just fine for 205,000 miles!! But then I've never ridden in the back seat...........

:D Neither will I

Give the passengers in the back a fan. They have free hands. :D

Four of these will easily fit in the glove box.

Give me some credibility! :D (Admittedly I don't relenquish the driver's seat when in the LX) But I bought it when I was living in Houston. Really Brit it's not a big deal for sure. Just didn't want there to be any remorse finding out about it after the fact. http://www.nxcessmotorcars.com/ over on the SW freeway is where mine came from and their finance guy was a breeze to work with.

I have a 99 with rear air and have never needed to use the rear air. That includes temps into the low 100's. I live on the AZ/Utah border and it does get hot here. But it's what they call dry heat :)

The rear air is great for a quick cool down, but my daughter tends to keep her vent closed and adjusts it to a rather high temp in back (76) so she doesn't freeze after the cool down. She rarely requests rear air turned on during a trip.

The 100 has the best A/C of any vehicle we have owned. The rear air is nice when there is a crowd in back, but for one or two in the second row, the front air alone is impressive. Arkansas is both hot and humid, but the A/C handles it with ease.

it's a shame you weren't looking when i sold my 2000/49K to don mcgill toyota...

Just means that it can be 90 degrees and if you are in the shade you won't be sweating your ass off. :) But after a few years you will look like a lizard.
