I know you are suppose to run moly grease in the birf and non moly in the bearings. I could not find the part numbers Dan ( Dan Dan the Cruiser parts man) suggested to me at 4 diff parts stores. So I bought Mobil 1 for both the Birfs and Bearings. Any one see anything wrong with using that in both? Its a non Moly type of red synth gease.

I also am going to use Valvoline Synth Dura Blend 80/90 in the diff.

Comments?

I saw the poll on Pirate and could not find the valvoline red that was talked about there.

Oh yeah, Front Axle rebuild party at Romer's house when Mbrodis comes up to help. If anyone in the Denver area wants to watch us so they can see how to do it. Don't know the day yet. Probably between the 22nd and the first some time. Depends on Mark's schedule. He has been kind enough to volunteer to help me because I have never done one.

Some factory engineer specified moly grease. Moly grease is specified when lubrication is required for parts that have very high pressure contact. This is a case where it seems logical to follow the factory specs and illogical to not follow the specs.

You know from your past reading on these forums that the birfields are subject to wearing out and ultimately need replacing if operated long enough. So, besides the fact that the stores you went to did not have moly grease on the shelf, why would you want to not use it?

A better question to be asked is where can you find moly grease where you live in Colorado.

I was able to find the Valv durablend Molly. I was looking for the synth stuff Cruiser Dan recommended to me. Thanks for the input

I'd think you are good to go with any moly grease supplied by any major petroleum manufacturer, including Valvoline.

Romer-I would not use the Mobil 1 with no moly in the birfs. The spec is for a moly grease, so you just need to find some before you tear into it. The Amsoil synthetic moly grease is very good stuff and should be available from a dealer near you. That Valvoline full synthetic or blend can be used in wheelbearings too-you could use that if you only want to mess with one grease. Personally I have 3 cruisers running the Amsoil synthetic moly grease in the birfs and knuckle bearings and Mobil 1 in the wheel bearings. If there is an Autozone near you they carry several different types of moly grease from Exxon.

Romer,

If you have Napa auto store, they too carry some Amsoil products. The one near me they have the red multipurpose synthetic grease which is lithium base and good for your wheel bearing, there is also the dark purple synthetic made by Amsoil which is moly fortified and great for your birfs. They come in a tube.

I'll get the Valvoline Moly synth stuff crusier Dan recommended for the Birfs. I am leaning towards keeping the Mobil 1 for the bearings.

Tim- Looks like we will do it on Monday the 27th. I am off and will try and get as much done as I can during the day. Mark is going to come by about 6PM. If your free on Monday, your more than welcome any time, I'll probably start at 9AM and go as far as I can. Your company is always welcome!
